Coming back from a lazy period in the hobby and after a few annoyed corals, everyone’s happy again

New guy in the tank

Is this coral really as rare as this guy is making it seem? I do like the coral but I don’t know if it’s actually rare or worth the price tag for a leather

3.5 years in and I generally suck at this. I was up before I was down. Through it all, the small trumpet frag with two heads that I put in over 3 years ago has brushed off TWO crashes

Anyone know what this is on my live rock? Is it macroalgae?

I've been given a 95 gallon tank. I'm unsure what direction to go with it.

Posted: 08 Sep 2020 06:24 PM PDT

Hi guys. First of all, I admire you all so much and the tiny worlds you've created are incredible.

After a few years of freshwater keeping, I recently ended up with a 95 gallon tank. Didn't really intend on taking on another tank, but I figured what the hell, if I have it. It's now a centerpiece in our dining room, and I did a little home improvement to accompany it. Looks beautiful.

Purchased lots of equipment, was all prepped for a large-scale freshwater planted tank, and... now it's just sitting. Here's my question- keeping saltwater has always been a dream of mine, I gained a good bit of knowledge just as a spectator of the hobby, so I need a quick reality check here. Should I just leave her empty, and crawl my way financially to starting saltwater as I learn more in the meantime? I do not have disposable income, and there's no way to cheap out in this hobby. I do own some items that would be suitable, but I know there are dozens and dozens more that I do not.

A couple more things, if this is realistic:

  • Knowing a higher water volume is a little bit more forgiving, is a 95 within recommended places to start for a beginner?

  • How much will the larger tank size affect initial costs and extent of setup?

  • I also have an empty 36 bowfront. Would it make much of a difference to start in this tank instead, in both maintenance, expenses, and difficulty?

  • Overall, what would you as a community say the one most imperitive aspect to starting a reef tank is, above others? The prior, extensive knowledge? Owning the necessities? Having a high amount of continuous funds available?

Thanks in advance, friends.

Are all quality reef tank lights over $250?!!

Posted: 08 Sep 2020 07:58 PM PDT

I just got a 65 gallon tank which I would like to turn into a reef tank. I've started looking at lights such as Kessil and other similar but they are $250 a piece. Which they said I would need 2 for a 65 gallon? So lights alone I would have to spend over $500 Is this typical for reef tank lights? Are there ones similar for a little cheaper? I don't want to go really cheap considering how expensvie corals are and I don't want to waste money for them just to die or not grow. Have you guys had any luck with cheaper lights? Or should I just do fresh water?
