IM FINALLY GETTING A TANK!!!

Posted: 05 Sep 2020 10:08 AM PDT

So, today is my birthday and as a gift my parents are taking me to get a big 40gallon. I've been researching and saving up for years, getting 2 different filters, buying test kits, getting ready.... today is finally the day to start cycling the tank!!

I was just wondering if bare bottom is okay. I'll get plenty of silk plants and decorations so they will have places to hide but would laying down some sand be better? I'm getting 2 fantails in a few weeks and will keep everyone updated!

Trying to figure out mystery problem.

Posted: 05 Sep 2020 12:48 PM PDT

To start, I've read the wiki and believe me I've spent hours googling, speaking to other people both hobbyists and a vet. I have 3 goldfish tanks, two 75 gallons and 150 gallons. Kept for several years. Kept at 70 degrees, parameters 0, 0, 10 or less. Water changes weekly.

About three months ago I seemed to have caught a mystery ailment. It wasn't sweeping, or affecting every fish. But the ones it did, they turned lethargic, sat, and died. I lost four fish. Was suggested to treat for both parasites and use a broad spectrum antibiotic which I did, on all three tanks. (R.I.P. wallet)

Everything seems better now but a couple that were acting sick before now just are periodically lethargic. They're not dying, but not acting like they were before. Throughout this all, I've never figured out what it could have been and am running this by here in case it rings bells for someone else. If it does, please let me know.

I hate pet stores

Posted: 05 Sep 2020 03:38 AM PDT

The other day my friends (who live together) went to a pet shop and bought a little bowl with 5 goldfish. I didn't know anything at the time about goldfish but a quick 2 minute search was enough to see that wasn't right. And they explained that the pet store person told them it was perfect and they should clean the water every 2 days (but it's more like every 6 hours if they don't want them to die...). WHY DO PET STORES DO THIS TO POOR LITTLE GOLDFISH? My friends are not thinking of getting a bigger aquarium, one fish already died and the others will follow one by one...

Goldfish behavior normal?

Posted: 05 Sep 2020 01:21 PM PDT

currently have 3 goldfish in a 50 gal. One large ( maybe 5") and 2 smaller ones ( around 3"), one of the smaller ones I can't tell if it's aggression or just playfulness but he will follow and nudge the other two. It upsets me because the largest one I've had the longest is so calm and easy going and here comes small guy being a butt to everyone. A lot of people say it's a sign of mating but it's almost to the point im worried he will stress the others out. Won't let the others graze or mind their own business. Any questions I'm happy to answer. Thanks!
