| Since the Canadian government put restrictions on fish medicines, how do we treat flukes? Posted: 15 Sep 2020 05:22 PM PDT For flukes I would usually use malachite green or praziquantel, but I can no longer get those because of regulations. What medicine do I use now? For anyone wondering, Parazoryne does almost nothing. [link] [comments] | ||
| Do goldfish bond with eachother? Posted: 15 Sep 2020 06:06 AM PDT Recently my 11 year old black moor passed away. I told myself I was absolutely not getting anymore goldfish and went to the store to check out options for something more tropical. At the store I saw two big chubby goldfish in their tank with all their baby fancy goldfish. The tank had an extra sticker saying "XXL goldfish, €25 per pair". One of the two is absolutely gorgeous. When I asked an employee about them I was told that they were brought in by an acquaintance. They are about 4 years old and have spent their entire life together. And as they were a bonded pair (m/f) they could only leave together. The low price for the two was because they were meant for adoption, rather than a traditional sale. This store generally does not take in fish. Theyve been in my tank for a few days now and have adjusted wonderfully. They are always together and Ive even spotted some breeding behaviour. Ive kept fancy goldfish for the past 6 years and theyve made me wonder if they do really bond deeply like that? One of my previous fancies acted a bit off when she lost her friend, but perked right up when I added a different fish in. (I have no plans on seperating the pair, I am just wondering if goldfish really form such a deep bond with one another) [link] [comments] | ||
| Need thoughts on future critters for empty tank Posted: 15 Sep 2020 04:58 PM PDT Long post but I have big aspirations for this tank. Background: So I have a 36 gallon which the setup can be seen in a past post. I've done hours upon hours of research on all sorts of fish related things in the past couples of weeks, I'm usually looking up more information every single day. I think I've come to a conclusion of which fish I want after many lists and narrowing down and checked each fish compatibility but wanted others opinions from this community. Keep in mind these would be included over the course of weeks to also check for roominess and diseases as we go because I don't want another ich incident. And I'll be adding driftwood to the tank. What I want: So for starters I wanted 2 mystery snails and 5 cherry shrimp, then I'd add two African dwarf frogs, then two sucker fish type preferably a Bristlenose pleso and hillstream loach, then lastly would be two fancy goldfish most likely black Moore and oranda. Reasoning: I really don't know if this would be overcrowded or not especially written out it seems too much, but as far as compatibility they should all deal with each other really well (and yes I'm aware of snails and shrimp becoming snacks occasionally). I figure the snails and shrimp will keep the cage clean a bit and are small enough to not make it crowded, the sucker fish will mainly be on walls or patrolling the bottom and may not even be seen for weeks so shouldn't crowd the swimming creatures. Now the frogs and fish I don't think would impede each others space but they also definitely could since they stroll a lot near the bottom. Any recommendations on either increasing or decreasing any of them, I might get one frog and one sucker fish type instead, I do have mild preferences on which ones I wouldn't like to be eradicated at all such as at least one frog and goldfish. There's two very large hide outs and then the future driftwood for smaller things since the fish won't fit. I don't know if my dreams are too big and will need to wait until a larger tank or if this is doable. When I slowly add them I'll be seeing whether it seems crowded or not. [link] [comments] | ||
| Upgrading tank- When to switch? HELP Posted: 15 Sep 2020 03:57 PM PDT Hey everyone, I have a question for you all. To make a long story short, i've recently fallen in love with fancy goldfish, and decided to get in on the hobby for myself. I know that my setup right now is not ideal or feasible for the long term, and would like some opinions on how to navigate my situation. Currently, I have a 20 gallon bare bottom tank with a (cheap tetra) hang back filter, a 256gph canister filter, a sponge filter, and a plant. I have two fancies in there, a thai oranda and a normal oranda (shoutout kingkoigoldfish). I do 50% water changes a week with a submersible pump, which is honestly not a lot of work at all compared to smaller fish tanks without this level of filtration. I plan on upgrading to a 45gal tall, or even a 50. I already have funds set aside and the space in my apartment. Both of my orandas are around 3 inches right now, they're still small, and I actually have a third one on the way which is also 3 inches. My question is; since I know a tank upgrade is inevitable with 3 fancies in a 20gal, will they be okay for a short while in this environment with their current size/my filtration/water changes? How do people normally go about upgrading aquariums, since surely not every single goldfish keeper starts with a 40gal? Should I be okay until they start to get a bit larger? Im on a college campus without a car, and it's surprisingly hard to find such large aquariums available for purchase online that can be shipped to your door, which is why I started with a 20gal (what I was able to find on Amazon before my first fish arrived). | HOW TO: Spray Bar for SunSun 304B Canister Filter Posted: 15 Sep 2020 06:21 PM PDT Hey there, I just got a SunSun 304B canister filter and it comes with all the basics but does not come with a spray bar (unlike the 303B). Does anyone have any experience making a spray bar? I don't want mine along the back wall and instead would like it extending along the left side wall of my tank to create a left-to-right flow for my tank. I have no skills with tools, ~*just a vision*~. But yeah, if anyone can either point me to a step-by-step with materials to how one can be made or can write one out for me in the comments, that'd be much appreciated! (I don't even understand how to identify the (PVC?) pipes I'd need or what material they'd have to be and/or if they would have to be sealed on with adhesive (silicon?) or just plain attached. As you can see I am beyond clueless. Any guidance would help. Thanks! [link] [comments] | ||
