i have a question so i already have a 40 gal cycled tank ready to go but is it a smart idea to put an 3 inch axolotl in it. the only prob i see is it being so small that feeding will be difficult. Thoughts?

causes of unexpected death?

Posted: 11 Sep 2020 08:50 PM PDT

i just found my pink axolotl upside down at the bottom of her tank. she was completely white and her gills were fallen off (the stems still there but the fluffy part was gone and found scattered all around the tank floor). she was fine yesterday, not a skinny axolotl so i know she didn't starve (and i fed her 2 days ago, tonight was feeding night. they eat earthworms). she has 2 tank mates, completely fine with healthy fluffy gills and getting a little fat. water change is due tomorrow (i do water changes on weekends). she had no injuries either, and even if she did wouldn't it just have grown back instead of her dying? i doubt that my other axolotls ate her gills considering the stem parts were still there and if the gill pieces wouldn't be all over the sand. her 2 other tank mates are all the same size and in a roomy tank with lots of hiding spots. does anyone know what could have caused her death? she is only around 8ish months old as far as i know (i got them in march as babies from a breeder, all the same size about 3 in long). both my other axolotls show no signs of disease, the water is not dirty although due for water change tomorrow, their gills are both super healthy and fluffy, and they just ate. what could have gone wrong to cause such an unexpected death?? i'm heartbroken

Axolotl growth

Posted: 11 Sep 2020 09:08 PM PDT

So I have had my axolotl for well over a year and he has grown maybe 3 or 4 inches since I got him, but ever since then he hasn't been growing much, just wanted to make sure there was nothing wrong with him or maybe he just has stunned growth for some reason. He gets fed regularly (usually earth worms and chicken) and his water gets filtered and re filled regularly.
