Please help with baby axolotls! Posted: 06 Sep 2020 04:43 AM PDT I had a pair of axolotls years ago and loved them, and I have been wanting to have a pair again for a long time. I have been looking all over trying to find them for sale but couldn't, so I finally gave in and bought them online. Big mistake. When they came they were way smaller than anything I have experience with and I feel like I am in over my head here. They are maybe an inch and a half long. I can't get them to eat anything and I am growing very concerned about how thin they are. I have offered them sinking shrimp pellets, sinking salamander diet pellets, frozen bloodworms, and frozen brine shrimp. There are also live feeder guppies in their tank because I wasn't expecting them to be that small. I read that when they are young they need live foods, but I do not have access to anything like that at my local pet stores and I was thinking they seem to be right at the size where you can start to offer other foods, so I was hoping to transition them to the pellets until they're bigger. I do have a worm bin with red wigglers, if that might work...? They are in a 29 gallon tank in my basement so the water stays cold enough for them. The filter I have on there has a very mild current. Because they are not eating anything and my filter is so mild, the tank got a little nasty before I did a water change last night. Not terrible, but the uneaten food on the bottom was moldy. Anyway, it gets worse. The lighter colored one now has some sort of angry red infection on its side. It doesn't look like a fungal infection to me, more like an inflamed tumor. Is this from the water being too dirty? I love these little guys and really want them to be okay. For now I have moved them to a smaller tank so I can keep a closer eye on them and so maybe they can find their food easier. Does anyone have any advice? Salt baths, tea baths, fridging, diet suggestions? [link] [comments] | ||
