Chiller or no chiller?

Posted: 11 Sep 2020 09:15 AM PDT

Would you buy recommend getting an aquarium chiller? I live in the UK so it's never truly hot.. but I'm still worried about the water being over safe limits for when I get an axolotl.

Any advice appreciated

TIA

Is it safe to get a large snail for my axolotl's tank?

Posted: 11 Sep 2020 08:08 AM PDT

Basically title. I'm wanting to get a snail to help keep my lotl's tank clean and I'm aware that they will try and eat anything smaller than their head, but would a large snail be a stressor/threat to him?

Cycling help

Posted: 10 Sep 2020 07:40 PM PDT

So I've been cycling my axolotl tank for about 5 weeks now (sans the axolotl, of course) and I feel like a sitting duck waiting, so I'm looking for some advice to see if I can make this go a bit faster. I've gotten the ammonia down, meaning there is beneficial bacteria, but my new problem are the nitrites. Currently my readings are .25 ppm ammonia, 5 ppm nitrite, and what looks to be 0-5ppm nitrate (it's a bit hard for me to tell for those). I have some goldfish flakes that I was putting in there pretty regularly, but since the ammonia started to go down I stopped adding them. I've also put about 10oz of fritz zyme 7 live nitrifying bacteria in the tank. I'm about 99% sure that at this point it's just a waiting game to get the nitrites to go down, but if there's anything I can do to make the process go a little faster, I'll probably be willing to try it :)

Axolotl gill fungus. Advice please!

Posted: 10 Sep 2020 07:18 PM PDT

Hey guys! I'm the owner of a little guy named Noodle. I looked at him today and noticed he had a string of white dots on his gill. Just a little bit, but I put him into a salt bath right away. 1 quart and 2tsp of salt. I'm still kind of freaking out. Any more advice? How bad is this?

Need help feeding my baby axolotl

Posted: 10 Sep 2020 07:02 PM PDT

I have had a baby axolotl (about 4 inches long) for about a week now and I can't seem to get him to eat anything but bloodworms. The store I bought him from recommended feeding him sinking shrimp pellets. I tried doing that for 2 days and he would eat them and spit them out , so I moved onto bloodworms. He loved eating them and would eat about 1/2 to 3/4 of a frozen cube. I then tried moving him to Canadian night crawlers however he did not like eating those either. Then I got some hikari sinking carnivore pellets and have been trying to feed him those for the last 2 days but he refuses to eat them too. Today I bought a different brand of earthworms and he also refuses to eat them. If anyone could give me some advice on how to get him to eat good nutritional food instead of just bloodworms that would be awesome!

imagitarium sand for axolotl

imagitarium sand for axolotl

Hi all! I have a 20 gallon long tank for my 1 year old axolotl Toothless. Its been cycled and has thus far been a bare bottom tank. He was recently upgraded to this tank from his grow out 10 gallon. I want to add some sand to his new permanent home. I got a 20 lb bag of imagitarium sand, not colored. Is this sand fine enough? Looking at it, it is a bit grainy. My local hardware stores don't have any pool filter sand, but I can get some play sand instead. I just worry about how dirty it will be, even if I wash it.

Have you guys had success with Imagitarium sand in axolotl tanks? Here is a photo of my good grumpy boy. He seems to have a permanent frown instead of the usual smile, and I think it is adorable.
