Floating Axie

Posted: 15 Sep 2020 08:50 AM PDT

I've recently noticed that my axolotl has been floating and have watched him actively try to release air bubbles and swim downward to keep himself at floor level. He's even resulted in standing under his filter and going into a little trunk decoration I have in his tank just to keep himself from floating upward. I'm thinking he might be constipated or "obstructed", but it would have to be due to food because his tank is bare bottom except for three Marimo moss balls that are far too big for him to eat. I also have noticed after two feedings (he usually has three small red worms per meal every few days) that he hasn't relieved himself. His parameters and tank temperature are all perfect, the only odd thing is the floating and the lack of feces. He also seems completely healthy otherwise. Gills are healthy, no missing limbs, and no tail scalloping. I would just like suggestions on how to help out my little guy cause he just seems frustrated

Vitiligo

Is vitiligo bad for axies or is it just a loss of pigment due to gentics and just happens?

Substrate question

Posted: 15 Sep 2020 06:41 AM PDT

I've had a blank bottom tank set up for a couple months for my axies. Was wondering if there's any specific pros and cons to having sand or any other substrate (I know not to use gravel, and to use fine sand). Is there extra cleaning or a change in water quality?

Training

Posted: 14 Sep 2020 08:32 PM PDT

So most of us have seen vids where people will stick their hand in the tank and the axie will come chill on top of it but still in the water. Any have any tips or directions for doing that?

Decoration ideas for 20g tank?

Posted: 14 Sep 2020 07:29 PM PDT

Hey friends! I'm redoing my 20gallon axolotl tank due to a ammonia issue that I just couldn't get rid of. I have 1 axolotl that's still a baby, he's currently in a 10 gallon and doing well. Ive clean out the tank and all the parameters are good with the water. I am cycling the tank now and I wanted to switch some things up. My tank is bare bottom and I'm thinking of putting tiles in on the bottom (tell me if this is bad or not). I don't think I'm going to do real plants again, but I am looking for some cool structures/hides etc. let me know whatever ideas y'all have! Thanks!

Can someone tell me if this hide would be safe for my axolotl?

Posted: 14 Sep 2020 01:29 PM PDT

Hi so I'm having the hardest time finding a safe hide that's big enough for my axie. He's about 7-8 inches long so PVC connectors aren't long enough for him and he doesn't use them. All the ones I've found are either expensive, take forever to ship or aren't aquarium safe. The pet stores near me don't have anything that I could find that would work either. I was going to get a reptile hide and clear coat it so it's aquarium safe but can't find krylon fusion clear in stock anywhere. So finally I found this hide (linked at bottom of post) that's not too expensive and ships fast and I was still wondering if someone could tell me it's safe for an axie? If not, some links for hides that are safe would be appreciated! Thank you in advance!

Food ideas?

Posted: 14 Sep 2020 12:39 PM PDT

So hi, erm I've heard that worms are great as a main diet but I'm reluctant as 1) I've heard they can be pricey and 2) anyone willing to look after my babies while I'm away probably wont want to feed them worms. So pellets, they okay? I would add bloodworms every now and again but are pellets okay as a main diet? Thanks
