In response to Mulder, the 10 yo Axolotl. This is Gompy my 5 yo with comparable light spots that developed over the years. She is very healthy!

Do his gills look ok? They seem really dark and I don’t know why.

This is Larry! We adopted him from a family member about a month ago and transitioned him from a 10 gallon tank to a 40 gallon. He's 5-6 years old and 9 inches long. So far he's been loving exploring his new home and always says hi to our other pets. He's also very difficult to photograph!

ISO axolotl eggs

Posted: 09 Sep 2020 05:50 AM PDT

Hello all!

I recently lost my axolotl of 13-ish years. I'm looking for some axolotl eggs to raise up from "scratch." Does anyone have some available for sale? I live in Omaha, NE, but more than willing to pay for shipping!

Axolotl tipped black?

Posted: 08 Sep 2020 09:01 PM PDT

I have a juvenile Lucy axolotl who is sick and stunted, it's been a long road trying to get her better. I got her from a store really not knowing anything, now I know better but I'm still glad I saved her. She was deathly thin, gills looked awful, she was very hot (around 78F), looked to have ammonia burns and fungus. That's all gone now.

She is approx 6-7 months old but only 4.5 inches. She's been growing slowly since I got her. My concern is that the tips of her gill filaments (which were non-existent when I got her,) tip of her tail, and tips of all of her toes are completely black. Her toe tips have been black since I got her. I know they turn black when they get older, but she's so small and I got her at around 3 inches and they were already all black.

Could this be some type of bacterial infection that is stunting her further? How would I treat it? I can try to get pics if necessary, it just doesn't show up on camera well.

If it's important: had her since mid June. She's only grown an inch and a half. She's been on pretty much strictly live Blackworms, she eats very well. Recently I've started introducing her to chopped earthworms, which she likes. She's tubbed with 100% water changes daily. Temp stays around 63F everyday. No light, not signs of fungus. Poops regularly.

Everything seems normal with her, she's gained so much weight, gills look much better, slimecoat has returned to normal, she's just hardly growing and has those black tips everywhere. What else can I do with her? I so badly want her to grow big enough to be with my other in the tank, and I feel like I'm running out of time. I have nowhere else to go with her): any advice is appreciated so much. Thank you

Lost a rescue today :(

Rescued a skinny golden albino axolotl with dwarfism and who's age was unknown from someone planning on releasing her, along with 3 others about 2 months. Her and one of the other ones I got have been a challenge to care for ever since I got them and the poor girl passed away while I was at school. She hasn't been eating well and had a hard time with her tankmates when I had her in my main axolotl tank for like a day or two because she was very small and slow. She was 4 inches when I measured her and I was told she was at least 5 years old. Came home to find her in her tub floating and not moving. It was one of the worst things I've seen in my life. I've never seen a dead axolotl before and I had to cover my eyes while putting her in a paper towel to burry her in because it was so hard to see what used to be a cute, yet sort of ugly salamander completely drained of all life. I can't figure out why she passed. I've had axolotls for almost 5 years now and have never lost one until now. I tried so hard to keep her alive. I don't know if the previous owner made a slip up before I got them or what. It's really weird and it makes me sad to know that precious little baby is gone.
