Aquatic Koi Unsure of these black marks... they are very vivid and bright.. are they black spot or just a change in colouration? Fish is eating, behaving normally and water levels are all fine. |

- Koi back in the house ponds after spending the summer in the conditioning ponds. Japan.
- What’s the best way to clean the alge off the white tiles. It looks ugly and is very hard to scrub off. I know it’s beneficial but on the sides it’s black and I don’t mind it growing there but on the white tile I’m looking for an easier solution to cleaning it off. Any help is appreciated.

| Beginners in need of assistance Posted: 22 Sep 2020 02:25 PM PDT Hello! My TL;DR is - new house with koi pond (no filters, no aeration) and no instruction, what do we need to do / add to keep these fish alive? Thanks in advance! Edited to add link to photos. We recently purchased a house that has a koi pond in the backyard. The sellers didn't leave much in the way of instruction aside from that we should drain the pond and refill it to see the fish. They left a few types of food, some blue pond dye, and some microbial algae cleaner. There's a small pump in the pond that they clearly used to drain it, and they've filled it from rain water (from the down spouts) or city water. They left a single note saying there are something like 60 fish in the pond. Most appear to be koi (to my novice eye). Most appear to be small / medium sized, but a few are maybe a foot+ in length. The pond is roughly 10' by 15' by 4', so roughly 4,500 gallons (probably less). There are no filters. There is no aeration. I've read enough to see that it should have aeration, biological/mechanical filtration, and water treatment. Filtration should be sized according the the pond size and the quantity / size of the fish, but the pond size also can only really support a certain quantity / size of fish. Additionally, there is a newly planted rhododendron (planted by previous owners, toxic to koi?) right by the pond. Some questions are:
At this point, I likely don't know what else I need to be asking. Any guidance or advice for getting set-up would be appreciated. Thanks! [link] [comments] | ||
