Aquatic Koi KHV (Koi Herpes Virus) Outbreak Update.

KHV (Koi Herpes Virus) Outbreak Update.

I mentioned in my previous post about the suspected KHV outbreak in our pond.

Overall we lost around 15 fish and have 7 remaining. I thought initially we were had lost more fish but they pulled through.

It seems as though the fish that are still alive have beat the virus.

The only silver lining is that 2 of the fish that lived Goldy and Nifty are our favourite fish with Nifty being the queen of the pond at around 40 inches.

The exact cause of the virus is still up for debate we have been in contact with various experts (who have all been fantastic) and the outbreak was caused by 1 of the 2 points.

One. 1 of the new fish added, this fish came from a pond that has hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of koi in it, countless ponds around the country could have the virus as a result. From what I have heard this is the most likely cause of the outbreak.

We are looking at the retailer sending a fish in the pond where ours came from to a lab for testing. Both parties are currently communicating with the other. We could then trace the virus back to the exact breeder it came from in Japan.

Two. The fish expert looking after the pond infected it. Clothes/nets realistically are not capable of bringing the virus across.

However pond vacuums are and he vacuumed the pond out within the last 2 months. Do not under any circumstances have your pond vacuumed by any vacuum that is not your own.

We have confirmation from the symptoms that it is almost certainly KHV however you need to send a live fish in for testing to be sure. We are not willing to do that as these fish would have to be killed.

We tried to send a fish in that had symptoms but it died before we were able to transport it.

We had 5 fish die within a few hours of one another this virus is brutal.

We were also told because the virus can lay dormant for years a fish we added 5 plus years ago could have had the virus and then passed it on though this is very unlikely.

Unless you quarantine new fish and raise and lower the temperature multiple times to trigger symptoms it is not possible to see if a fish has the virus.

Even then they may carry it but hold the antibodies to stop it from effecting them. And could pass it on.

We are still trying to find the cause if I find out I will post another update.

I just hope I was able to educate people about the virus to stop it from hitting their ponds.

The only believed way to fight the virus is to crank up the heat excessively however there are many strains of this forever mutating virus that has been around for 2 decades

Alge on walls

What's the best way to get alge off of the pond walls. I have an above ground 700 gallon tank I made out of concrete with white tiles over the concrete and they're Turing green and black with alge. I've tried scrubbing but there are some stubborn parts.
