Posted: 20 Aug 2020 09:07 AM PDT It's fire season in Northern California again, which always raises the question of evacuation readiness for us and our pets. My family and I had a "fire drill" last night when a fire broke out close to our house, and I had to test my evacuation plan for the first time this year. I wanted to share my fish evacuation plan for anyone who, like me, has been struck hard by multiple tank syndrome. Disclaimer: the safety of yourself and the other people in your home always needs to take priority. I have this plan in place in the event that I know I have time, but am expecting to evacuate and be gone for an unknown amount of time. Last year people in my area were out of their homes for 2+ weeks, so I want to bring as many of my pets with me as possible to avoid them dying of starvation or water issues. I have 15 fish tanks, two dogs, two geckos, and a small outdoor pond. 13 of my tanks are individual bettas, plus one pea puffer, and a community tank that also contains a betta, so I can't exactly scoop my fish into a cup and be off. For my bettas and puffer I bought two of these compartmented tote boxes off McMaster-Carr. I chose the 16.5L"x11"Wx6"H, plus two long dividers and four short dividers. This gives me 12 individual compartments per container. I modified the dividers so there's room for a heater to lay across the center four compartments, and left space for a sponge or internal filter in a middle slot as well. That leaves space for eight fish in each box, though I could steal the filter compartment if needed. While less than ideal for long term housing, this setup lets me load up my bettas and evacuate with them, and will serve as a suitable temporary tank if I'm out of my house for a while. It will easily fit on a friend's counter, or could potentially be kept with you in an evacuation shelter if needed. Water changes are straightforward as the comparments share water, and the heater and filter will keep them as comfortable as possible. Here's what I do during the actual evacuation:
This got long so I won't include anything about the other fish or animals. Suggestions or feedback are appreciated! [link] [comments]

Posted: 20 Aug 2020 07:41 AM PDT I posted a water quality question a little bit back and wanted to thank everyone who tried to help me. Unfortunately, I misidentified Harry not feeling well due to beginning fin rot but it instead quickly progressed into dropsy. I didn't have time to set up a hospital tank before he started pineconing. I'm gonna miss the guy a whole bunch. I won him from my college biology class after we did labs with bettas. He was the most reactive in our lab results and he never lost that personality until he was really sick. I'm keeping his tank up and messing with the water stuff to see what I can learn from this. That way it won't happen again [link] [comments]
