Posted: 23 Aug 2020 06:00 PM PDT Afterwards a neighbor came by to meet us and it turns out one of the fish was blind and required special feedings. We weren't aware of that, but I'm not sure why the other one died. I feel terrible. Thinking about re-homing the rest of the koi so they don't die too. But what could have caused this? I feed them by the 5-minute rule once a day but we haven't done anything else to them. A storm rolled through a couple of nights ago so not sure if that affected anything? [link] [comments] | ||

Posted: 23 Aug 2020 04:44 AM PDT I currently have three small koi (<3 inches) and three shubunkin in a 110 gallon indoor mini-pond, and I am wondering how much and how often I am supposed to be feeding them. The fish food itself says 2-3 times a day, and I often see as much on the few websites that do mention anything about fry — but I have been constantly struggling with nitrates feeding them twice a day as advised. Is my filtration just not up to snuff yet for this amount of fish, and/or can I get away with only feeding them once a day? The filtration itself are two sponges, one for 125 gallons and the other for 80, and a canister that is supposed to handle up to 100. I know I should ideally have a canister that handles twice the amount of water, but that was all I could afford at the moment. I have also considered that the substrate might be a problem as well — it is basically large gravel chunks (1-2 inch diameters), which of course neither the koi nor the shubunkin can properly sift through at their size to retrieve any uneaten food. It also does not have as much surface area for bacteria to hide in. Am I better off just having no substrate then, as far as cleanliness goes? I recently bought some pothos to help suck up the nitrates as well, but as that's only been within the past couple days, I've yet to notice an effect. [link] [comments] |
