| Questions about ph,sunlight, and behaviors oh my. Posted: 15 Aug 2020 01:05 AM PDT Hi everyone! I have a 300 gallon 3 foot deep pond that I set up this summer for my three koi fish. It going pretty good so far even with some bumps in the road. However I live in Utah we're the summers can get pretty hot. In fact for the past few days it's been getting up to a hundred degrees fairly consistently. This has raised the water temperature to around 85 degrees at the highest which is most certainly at the upper reaches of what koi fish can handle. To stop this we have been putting an umbrella over the pond in the afternoons in an effort to keep the water temperature at around 77 degrees Fahrenheit. I was wondering if what I'm doing is correct and how much time you would recommend shading the pond in order for proper photosynthesis to occur and to establish a healthy ecosystem. My next question is regarding my ponds ph. I use dechlorinated tap water which is naturally already pretty alkaline. I also have a water Lilly, water cabbage, and a bit of filamentous algae in the pond which is kept in control by barley extract which all also contribute to a high ph. Without putting up the umbrella the ph reaches 9 quite easily which is to high for these fish. I was wondering if there is any other natural ways to low the pond ph slowly to a more acceptable level. My last question I think I know the answer to but would like your observations as well. I notice my fish like to swim or sit near the bottom of the pond at day and when 7:00 pm rolls around they spring to life and start swimming near the top and siphon pebbles for algae. I just want to make sure this is normally behavior. Thanks for reading sorry it was so long. Overall the fish are doing great and are even eating out of my hand! I look forward to continue to care for them. [link] [comments] | ||

| Koi are always scared of everyone near pond. Please advise. Posted: 14 Aug 2020 07:29 PM PDT I have had the pond with the same koi for about 1.25 years now. Koi are approximately one foot long each, I have 10. A significant portion of the pond is covered. Here is the problem, anytime I approach the pond or try to feed them they immediately hide and only come out when they cannot see me. No matter how much I wait or slowly approach the pond, they hide. Now I just have to throw the food in and watch from a distance. I want to be able to hand feed them but at this rate it doesn't seem possible. For sure, it has been ruled out that there are no predatory animals or things scaring the koi. What can I do to get them to hand feed and be more comfortable. I tried holding off on food for a day or two like videos suggested, but to no avail. Thanks! [link] [comments] | ||
