the Fin Gang gathering for a veggie snack

Just adopted this guy and moved him from a 15 gallon into a 47 gallon. I’d like to get him into an even bigger tank with a friend but for now he seems happy.

Just finished this Fantail Oranda in gouche, and I had such a great time that I want to paint more. If you have them, I'd really like to see pictures of your goldies to use for another one of these paintings!

I "planted" some english spinach we had bought in a bottle above the fishtank and it sprouted leaves and the roots almost doubled in length over night! I'll have to move it into the garden soon but i plan to permanently grow sprouts and herbs this way. My fish is very proud of his floating garden

Question: Why Does My Goldfish Have A Long Thread In Its Tail?

Posted: 12 Jul 2020 09:41 PM PDT

I'm a new fishmom and I recently bought 2 pingpong goldfishes. The other one, right now, is moving with a long brown thread. I don't know if that is its feces or whatever but it's kinda bothering if it's a parasite? I've fed it pellets so far. Thank you

Given bad advice about new goldfish

Posted: 12 Jul 2020 08:29 PM PDT

Hello!

I went to my local non-chain pet store and got (what I am now learning) really bad advice about two new goldfish for my kids. The clerk told me that the two I was getting would be fine in a bowl. We did a 5 gallon tank instead because I wanted a filter for them and because a bowl seemed cruel. Now I'm realizing this is obviously WAY too small as we are researching everything. Plus, the filter they sold me was wrong for the tank so I'm waiting for a new filter to arrive. I have the aerator thing and found some tubing at another store but I'm waiting for the filter stone thing.

The fish are about 1.5 inches long. We will be diligent about keeping the tank clean. How long do I have in this 5 gallon tank? Ideally I would like to budget the money out for a way larger tank, so I'd like a few months to sock away money. But will the fish be stressed during that time?

I know some will say return them but honestly, we have bonded with them and I want to give them a good life. I'm afraid if I return them, they will just end up in a bowl.

Thanks in advance for your time!

Discovered a white spot on Normy's head. Is it ich??? We are moving so his tank will be totally clean. Can I just put him back in there?

Help my fish is harassing my other two goldies

Posted: 12 Jul 2020 09:24 AM PDT

I have 3 goldfish in a 1,100 gallon pond with a couple koi but one of my goldfish I realized was chasing one of the other foldfish grabbing her fins and sucking on her slime coat. I think he's a mature male trying to bred and he's trying to breed with my other fish but I don't think she's ready to breed and I'm worried he's also eating her slime coat. Also hes stressing her cause he will not leave her alone .

First time goldfish help!

I've been keeping betta fish for about 15 years now, but I've never really ventured over to other types of fish. I've been intrigued with orandas since I was a little kid, and I've finally decided I'm ready to get one! I just have some questions before I dive into buying & setting up/cycling a tank.

  1. What size should I be looking at for a 5-6 inch oranda (the average size I've seen from the breeder I'm leaning towards purchasing from)?
  2. Will it be happy as a solitary fish, or do I need to look at getting more than one?
  3. Is there equipment I can purchase to keep a tank cool enough? I've read they prefer colder water. I'm used to my tropical little guys needing heaters, so I'm not familiar with what to look for on the opposite end. I live in NM, and it gets HOT inside during the summer, even with air conditioning, so I want to make sure I'm able to keep the water comfortable and safe. For reference, my 10 gallon with a betta is naturally staying at about 85 degrees without the heater turning on right now.
  4. The breeder I purchase my bettas from also has a wide variety of fancy goldfish, so I'm leaning towards purchasing from them, but I would also love recommendations for other breeders, too! I live in southeast NM, so I'm looking for someone that ships, or is within a couple hours driving distance.
  5. Any general tips are welcome and highly appreciated!

Thank you!
