Hi! I’m a first time fish mum and need some help. I got this fish yesterday from Pets At Home (UK store) and they said he’s an Oranda but none of the pictures I can find online look like him. Is he a fantail? He has the 2 distinct anal fins and the 4 piece tail. Any help would be really great!

Subjectively, my new prefilter is as ugly as sin. Personally, I love how those pragmatic Germans value function over aesthetics.

Do you dose your new fish with anything?

Posted: 15 Jul 2020 07:19 PM PDT

When I get new bettas in the mail, I dose them with seachem stressguard upon moving them into their permanent tanks. I'll be getting 2 orandas as soon as my new tank is cycled, and they'll be my first experience with goldfish. My local pet store advised dosing them with the stressguard as well as a bit of aquarium salt when they arrive. The store doesn't specialize in fish, though, so I figured I'd just ask here and see if that's good advice/standard practice.

First time cleaning the fish tank

Posted: 15 Jul 2020 07:08 PM PDT

Hi everyone!

We have 3 goldfish, one fancy and 2 Ranchu. We've had them about 3 days now and tonight we conditioned a few buckets of water to do a water change tomorrow or the next day. I just have a few questions.

Just a little background we have a 55 gallon with a 70 gallon canister filter and a sponge filter. Our substrate is sand and we have a few decorations (river rocks, fake plants) We also have the API freshwater master testing kit and water conditions are pretty perfect right now.

1) How often should we do a water change and what % of water?

2) We were told to condition the water and let it sit for 24 hours before doing a water change. Is this totally necessary? We bought a python clean and fill so it would be easy to just hook it up to the sink and fill it straight into the tank then condition but if it's better to let the conditioner sit in the new water in buckets that's fine.

3) How often to you remove decorations and give them a scrub? I'm use to having betta fish so we do it weekly for them.

4) Do you remove the fish from the tank when cleaning? I've seen videos of people leaving them in but I have sand as substrate so I think it might bother them.

5) Which leaves me to the last question... what's the best way to clean sand?

Lethargic Goldfish

Posted: 15 Jul 2020 04:11 PM PDT

Hey all! First time posting here and I'm pretty new to the pond life. My pond is about 700 gallons with a raised 250 gallon bog. I have a small waterfall, two air stones, and a skimmer. I have water lilies and hyacinth in the pond and several plants in my bog. It has been running for almost two months and my water tests are as follows:

Phosphate - 0.2ppm pH - 7.6 High Range pH - 7.4-7.5 Ammonia - 0ppm Nitrite - 0ppm Nitrate - 0ppm

I know the phosphate is high but I have only had a minor string algae bloom so far. My question is about one of the larger goldfish we added about two weeks ago (two 6-7 inch goldfish and two 3-4 inch fancy goldfish). He seems to be very lethargic and practically lays on a rock next to the waterfall for most of the day while the other three seem pretty happy and healthy. He is almost all black in color but I've recently noticed he has some white/yellowish across his belly that maybe I did not notice originally. What can I do to make sure he is okay? I do have a minor leak in my waterfall that I'm addressing tomorrow and thinking it might be from the tap water I've been adding to top it off. That or maybe stemming from the limestone around the pond (I don't have any in the pond and haven't had much rain that would have runoff from the stones into the pond). I will try to get a good picture tomorrow. Please and thank you for any and all advice!
