[AUTOPOST] CARESHEET, WIKI & WEEKLY HELP POST - July 20 to July 27

Welcome to r/bettafish!

Click this link to view our CARESHEET

Quick synopsis of caresheet:

  • Minimum tank size is 5 gallons (about 20 liters) for a regular sized betta, and 10 gallons (about 40 liters) for a king/giant betta

  • Bettas need an adjustable heater and a thermometer to ensure water temperature stays between 78-82°F or about 26-28°C

  • Bettas need a cycled tank- this requires a filter

  • Bettas need silk or live plants and hidey holes with no sharp edges.

  • Bettas have a special organ, the labyrinth organ, allowing them to breathe air. They require constant access to air at the top of the tank.

  • Bettas will jump- it is best to have a tank with a lid

Quick synopsis of the wiki:

  • Contains info on basic betta care, diseases, potential tank mates, tail types/coloring, differences between males/females, ordering bettas, moving with bettas, setting up sororities and MORE!

  • This most likely has the answers to your questions. Feel free to ask questions if you are confused or aren't sure about something.

WEEKLY HELP POST

This is the place to ask anything and everything about bettas. Be sure to include your water parameters(ammonia/nitrite/nitrate,) tank size, how long the specific issue has been occurring, and some pictures if there is something which requires a diagnosis (e.g. fin rot/melt, velvet, dropsy.)

How do I upload pictures?

Go to imgur.com and select "New Post". Add all the clear pictures you have so we can better determine what is going on with your fish. It is recommended you set the album to private if you don't want weird comments. Click upload. From there, click the share button- if you are on mobile, hit "copy to clipboard" and paste the link into your comment on here. If on desktop, copy the link and paste it here.

For those new to technology- ctrl + c is copy, ctrl + v is paste.

To have your link like this, put these [ ] brackets around the text you want to show, with no space before the first word or after the last word, and without adding a space after the second bracket, use parentheses ( ) for the link, with no spaces between the parentheses or the link itself.

Be sure to read our rules before posting or commenting.

If your question was not answered yesterday, please feel free to post again!

Ask away!

Our new boy’s sheen is just ridiculous. He’s basically reflective.

Why do we have the rant tag if we cant talk about things that make us angry?

Posted: 20 Jul 2020 08:15 AM PDT

Seriously. Bad fish care, ESPECIALLY in my own household, pisses me off. But I'm not supposed to talk about it. Despite the fact that this sub has a rant tag, that insinuates the ability to speak out about things that piss us off, we can't talk about the things that piss us off most.

Is there too much stuff in this tank?

Posted: 20 Jul 2020 06:05 AM PDT

Thanks for all the advice on my betta who stays by the heater and filter! I have a happy update if anyone is interested!

So turns out I'm just super impatient. Which wasn't the best for Oogi. The heater that I thought wasn't working actually was perfectly fine and now the tank is super warm. When my thermometer comes in tomorrow I'm going to make sure to be on the safe side still. But he was probably over there because it was way warmer than the water. The filter turned out to not be a problem either because all day today he's been swimming around and making his cute bubble nests. I guess I was just over worried for nothing. If I waited like I probably should have then the water would have been just fine for him and would've saved me all the worry. Happy to say I have a healthy and active betta now.

Also thanks extra for the advice because there are some things that didn't come to mind. Before joining this group I never realized that betta needed big tanks with a heater, filter, hideouts, etc. I would've felt terrible if I was one of the people to put him in a little half gallon tank with water and food. But this group is actually extremely helpful for new betta owners and I'm so thankful I joined. What an amazing and helpful group 😊

Our first betta (and zebra snail)! 5gal tank with (almost all) natural plants, our 4yr old named him Rainy (and Rosey). Any suggestions for making it better for our little guy? Sadly, we don't have enough room for a bigger tank...

Is my poor betta healthy? His fins are so terrible looking, we've had him about a month. I do weekly water changes, water tests, temp is 75, feed once a day, and he has 2 snail tank mates. Is there something else I should be doing to help him reach his full potential?
