Nitrate and Nitrite too high, help!!

Posted: 31 Jul 2020 06:38 AM PDT

yo! Im a relatively new axolotl owner, I did extensive research before getting my baby and she's been very healthy with no issues up until right now. I did my routine testing of the water parameters after doing a water change (which I do often, twice a week usually) and for whatever reason the nitrate and nitrite levels were faaarrr beyond what they should be (nitrite at 2ppm and Nitrate at 100ppm). I quickly tested the tap water to see if it was high in either of those, but the results for both tests were 0ppm. I did a large water change (over 50%) and let it cycle overnight, but i had no luck because I tested it the next morning and the nitrite was still 2ppm and the nitrate was 80ppm. I'm not sure what the problem could be here, but my axie is starting to look stressed because of the water parameters. Please help!!

Anyone know why Loki is having stringy poops? Got her from a breeder about 5 days ago, probably 3-4 months old

Where is all this ammonia coming from?

Posted: 31 Jul 2020 04:13 AM PDT

I'm so frustrated. This tank has been cycled for months and I'm pretty sure the cycle crashed over the weekend. I have 1.2ppm ammonia, 0.3ppm nitrites, and 3ppm nitrates. There is nothing in the tank, but I was planning on bringing home my axolotl today. In the past week, I've been doing 50% water changes DAILY. When I test it after a water change, ammonia is 0 and each morning when I wake up it's back to 1.2. I have done several deep cleans of the sand, and nothing. At this point I am extremely frustrated because I'm bringing a lotl home today and I still can't get to the root of this problem.

I have come to own a malnourished axolotl with damaged gills and heat stress. I am currently cooling their tank by cooling my room and adding a fan, I’ve reduced water flow by dispersing the filter, and have moved them from the cichlids pellets they were on to salmon pellets made for axies.

Here's what I have as far as equipment goes.

30 gallon tank with generic fish gravel

A few decorations and such with places to hide

This filter: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Aqua-Tech-Power-Aquarium-Filter-3-Step-Filtration-30-60-Gallons/10291977?athcpid=10291977&athpgid=athenaItemPage&athcgid=collection&athznid=390985836_collection&athieid=v1&athstid=CS020&athguid=539d23ee-007-173a347cef922d&athancid=null&athena=true

I'm really looking for a list of necessities, and a cost estimate for each item I need
