I need some help

I need some help

I have three Axolotls in a 75 planted tank. It has very fine sand as the substrate, I have a canister filter with a baffled and slow output, and I have a chiller hooked up to it (sitting at a constant 63-64 F). For the past few days my oldest one (a 2 mo Lucy) has had very red, almost purple, gills and they've been curling forward pretty noticeably and he hasn't been eating. The other two are doing fine so I thought he may just have been a little stressed after rescaping the tank. However, this morning I came down stairs and he was lying upside down on the bottom. He's thankfully still breathing but his pink skin does look noticeably "duller" than normal. I immediately put him in the fridge to hopefully slow down whatever is happening to him. Here is a picture I took last night. Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that as soon as I noticed his gills I did check the water parameters and everything looks good.

EDIT #2: He's been in the fridge for a couple of hours now and every time I've poked my head in he's been upright and moving around a bit. Some good news I guess.

IceProbe for a 29 gallon?

Posted: 22 Jul 2020 08:30 AM PDT

Hey yall. I'm not an axolotl owner, but I want to be! I have a 29 gallon, and I'm setting it up with live plants and sand. I'm looking online for a chiller, I'm not trying to spend a ton of money right now. Would one or two iceprobes work? I do have a pretty cool downstairs living room also.

How do you set up computer fans for cooling?

Posted: 22 Jul 2020 06:04 AM PDT

Hi everyone,

It would be great to hear from those of you who have used computer fans to cool your tank! How have you wired it up, and how are you clipping/sticking it to the tank?

My aquarium fan is pretty noisy and bulky, and the computer fan option looks really practical.

Thanks for your help in advance!

Last update

I'm sorry to say this but the axolotl died overnight, he looked okay when I went to bed, his gills were fine, I had put him in a salt bath earlier so I wasn't too concerned by a small path of fungi, I would clear it up in the morning, but when I woke up, he had died, his gills shrunk to literally nothing. I'm sorry this wasn't a happy update.

Help with tank set up

Posted: 22 Jul 2020 05:46 AM PDT

So I've slowly been getting a tank set up for when I buy my Axolotl and just looking for some advice on ideas for the tank its self, such as what plants are a good choice, types of hides and anything that would make the tank both interesting and well suited for the little one

gills?

Posted: 22 Jul 2020 10:37 AM PDT

I have been looking at pic of axolotls and pretty much all of the axolotls in the pics have really frilly red gills. Benji's (the axolotl) are just short, but it has been like this his whole life. Is there any way to help with this? He lives in a 20 gallon with real plants, the ph, nitrate, nitrite, and ammonia levels are fine, his tank stays in 64-69 degrees fahrenheit, i do tank 3 gallon tank changes 2x a week.

Possible tank mates for axies?

Posted: 22 Jul 2020 03:17 AM PDT

I have a bristlenose pleco and looking to get 2 or 3 axies. The tank is 110L (24 gallons).

I was thinking a few green swordtails and/or maybe some zebra danios. Thanks

Is this columnaris? I got 2 axos June 20th 2020 and since then they’ve grown alot and pigmented alot as well. They get daily water changes and are tubbed so idk if those white patches are skin shed or just natural lack of pigmentation. The gills appear healthy and unaffected but input is welcomed!

Using a drink/camping cooler as a tank during a heatwave??

Posted: 22 Jul 2020 01:43 AM PDT

We don't get too much heat where I live, but we definitely do get some heatwaves. Like right now.

I'm struggling to keep Lavenders tank at 70°, and it's been sneaking up to 75° even with:

20g tank on floor.
Mesh top.
Fans pointed at surface
Bubble wall/filter cranked.
Ice bottles

Probably this is unavoidable because im currently staying at my father in law's trailer with my bf, and likely will be until september- and living in a trailer is only a little more hot than living in a literal tin can.

So my thought was to convert a Coleman camping cooler (I think probably 15g) into a temporary tank until the heatwave breaks. I've already scrubbed it, bleach soaked it, and let the hose overfill it to rinse for 15 minutes or so, so I'm confident it's clean enough at least.

Assuming this idea is practical enough and I'm not missing something obvious, what should my end result look like? Should the lid be on almost tight/diagonal/(I'm assuming not tight). I was thinking move the filter and bubble wall in, yay or nay? Everything else except for her hidey rock would stay in her tank.

Ideally, this wouldn't be for more than a couple days.

Ideally, I would be able to get her set up in it and go camping for one night/two days safely. Otherwise, I can do as much maintenance as needed.

So how close/far off base am I with this one?

How many axolotl for a 110 litre (24 gallons) tank?

Posted: 22 Jul 2020 03:11 AM PDT

Title says it all.

I've got a bristlenose in there as well, apart from that and some fake plants it's empty.

Thanks

[ADVICE} Thoughts on water coolers?

Posted: 21 Jul 2020 10:53 PM PDT

Hi all! With the current heat wave, my little guy has been less than comfortable and keeping his temperature in check has been a struggle. What does everyone use for cooling?

Axl currently lives in a 29 Gal tank with a pair of 2-fan coolers on top and a fan blowing air at the side of the tank, and these days it has been a real struggle keeping the temperature from going above 75F. I was looking for more fans on Amazon when I found these cheap-o water chillers and was wondering if anyone had used them or was using anything like it? I'm worried about creating a current since I know for a fact he HATES water currents (he goes in his log and pouts when it's cleaning time). These are the 2 I'm looking at:

https://amazon.com/Eversecu-calentador-enfriador-temperatura-controlador/dp/B07G5728HT

https://amazon.com/Aquarium-Chiller-Cooling-Heating-Jellyfish/dp/B08BFHYBHT

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated :)

Axie floats 24/7, is that normal?

Posted: 21 Jul 2020 05:47 PM PDT

Hi! My girl is a floater. I read about other axolotls floating temporarily due to gas and whatnot, but I was wondering if it ever occurs that they just always prefer to float? She hasn't always floated, she used to hide under her little bridge and chill by some decorative rocks I have. However, for the past 3 months she never visits the bottom of the tank. I don't even see her try.

Parameters seem healthy, 68 degrees and no ammonia with 50% water changes every 7 days. When I change her water I add some aquarium salt to harden the water a bit because I noticed she seems more active when the water is slightly hard. She's got a sponge filter with a bubbler in her tank, which is 20 gallons. I feed her every other day, and she's approx. a year old. Any advice or comments?
