- Just found this in our tank...could it be a leech? Could it have come from blackworms? Girl has had slime coat issues for weeks now and tubbing didn’t help. Where did they come from? Are they harmful to her?

Help! Nitrite levels way too high Posted: 13 Jul 2020 09:48 AM PDT So I recently rescued a young male axi from someone who'd basically abandoned him, along with a pretty basic setup (tank, Fluval U4 filter, a few fake plants but nothing live). I've kept exotic pets before (mainly reptiles) but this is my first tank animal so I'm a bit new to this. I transported the tank water with the tank, as I'd read this was a good thing to do, and tested the water when I got home. Ammonia levels, pH etc were fine, but the nitrite levels were well over 4ppm. Every day since then, I've been changing between 25% and 50% of the water, dechlorinating it beforehand, and adding mixture containing nitrifying bacteria to it. I've also bought a jump net and aquarium fan to help aerate the tank. It's been about a week, and the nitrite levels are at about 2ppm now, but I'm freaking out that my poor lil axi is gonna be poisoned or something :( He was really badly neglected by his previous owner as I've mentioned, so I'm not sure if the nitrite levels had been that high for a while, or whether or not it's something to do with the filter (which I'm still a bit unsure about how to test/change), but based on what I've read, I think the bacteria in the filter may be dead. If that's the case, what do I do? Or does it sound like there's something else up? TIA, sorry for the wall of text but I'm panicking [link] [comments]

Posted: 13 Jul 2020 06:57 AM PDT My axos have been having a rough time with ammonia, and until yesterday, I didnt know that my tap water came WITH ammonia, specifically a 2-4 ppm on the API Master Test scale. Well I have sea chem prime and use that, but I dont want to use too much and hurt them worse with these chemicals. Right now I redid most of the water and the tank is at .25 ppm, but is there something else I should be doing? I'm really worried for my guys and I dont want anything bad to happen to them and I feel absolutely terrible I let it get this bad without knowing :'( [link] [comments]

Light green hue on GFP despite not being under black light Posted: 12 Jul 2020 08:30 PM PDT After recently learning that my leucy is also a GFP I realized that when my black light is off his tail still has a light green hue to it. I just wanted to know if this is normal with GFPs (Maybe something similar to how glow in the dark items "charge up" in sunlight and can glow later). He's completely happy and healthy and hasn't been displaying any out-of-the-norm behaviors. His parameters are normal and although his water has been slightly warmer than usual I've been making constant efforts to keep it at a good temperature for him (which seems to be working fine based on how he's behaving). Just a worried axolotl owner who doesn't know much about GFPs. [link] [comments]
Posted: 12 Jul 2020 05:22 PM PDT So I used to feed my axie feeder fish when he was younger and never noticed an issue, but I was younger too so who knows. I just wanted to make sure (and I apologize if its dumb to ask 😖) they can digest small fish bones no problem right? I wanted to double check but I cant find anything online about whether they can digest the bones or not 🥴 (I breed platies so we're talking tiny bones). Thank you for any and all help 😭💕 [link] [comments]
Posted: 12 Jul 2020 04:48 PM PDT Hi everyone, I've had my axolotl for seven months now, and recently she's been really skittish. When I first got her, she would swim up to my hand and nip my fingers, whereas now, if I make a wrong move, she bolts. I'm really concerned because I know stress can physical health problems, and also she swims so frantically I'm afraid she'll injure herself bumping into something. She has plenty of different hides, and I can't think of anything that could have triggered this. Has anyone else experienced this, and could I get some advice? [link] [comments]
Need help figuring out foggy water Posted: 12 Jul 2020 10:41 AM PDT Hi! For my boyfriends and I 4 year anniversary he surprised me with a new axolotl. It's our first time owning one and he set it up while I was working to surprise me so she got put into the tank right at set up and it wasn't cycled beforehand. Please don't yell at me or tell me she's going to die or something. The water was clear the first day but on day two or three it got super foggy. I have tested the water and based off the strips there isn't anything toxic in the tank except for a very small amount of ammonia. I have had her for about 10 days now and have been doing 20-25% water changes daily, but it is still incredibly foggy. My axolotl doesn't seem to be bothered, she eats, she poops, she swims around, she seems fine to me. What can I do to get rid of the foggy water? All I see online is to do water changes but I feel like it's not improving at all? Also we put in bottled water initially and I got dechlorinator and have been using tap water for water changes after I use prime. [link] [comments]
Posted: 12 Jul 2020 10:33 AM PDT We're working on buying supplies so we can add an axolotl to the crew. We're setting up a 20 long and would love some advice on the best options for a filter and tank cover (no cover isn't an option as we have curious cats) Budget friendly is the name of the game, I'm down for good quality but want to keep cost reasonable. TIA for any help, we are super excited to start getting things together so we can start cycling the tank. ❤️ [link] [comments] |
