What do i need for an axolotl? Posted: 07 Jul 2020 11:45 AM PDT I am really considering buying an axolotl since I have a spare tank that I haven't used for about a year and I want something different in there other than fish. what basic things do I need for an axolotl and how big should the tank actually be? Are these good ingredients for an Axolotol treat. Posted: 07 Jul 2020 11:30 AM PDT Freeze dried blood worms, shrimp pellets and a chicken egg. Clocked then frozen cut and given to my Axolotol. Any ideas, or suggestions. [link] [comments]
Not Sure If Fungus? Help, please! Posted: 07 Jul 2020 09:55 AM PDT Hey everyone! Firstly, are these spots are the base of her gills a fungus? We've just taken her out and tubbed her and are treating her with a tea bath (since we're not sure if it's a fungus, we didn't want to do a salt bath yet). Backstory: We have two male axolotls, Myrtle (Leucistic) and Gimli (Melanoid), who are both about a year old. Myrtle has always been a little more anxious or skittish, but she's always been ready and willing to eat and enjoys exploring the tank. We do have a light on for four hours a day, for a couple of low-light plants we have, but they have plenty of hides and places to get shade (Myrtle is particularly fond of hiding under the sponge filter). About 6-8 weeks ago, Myrtle started getting a little bit skinnier and was being a bit more fidgety about eating, and we noticed that her gills were getting a little less full. We couldn't quite figure out what was wrong -- she seemed to be eating still, if not regularly, but she was just skinny. The Melanoid, Gimli, was eating the same amount of food and was staying about the same size/growing. We had them eating red wrigglers, and when Myrtle started not wanting to eat as much, we switched over to pellets (first Hikari Sinking Carnivore Pellets and then these that we found off of Etsy that had good reviews) and they really like them. We tried going back to worms, but they weren't as interested. I know they're not meant to be a staple, so we also got some Repashy Meat Pie that we're going to try using once we get the molds in. After rotating the foods and not seeing much of a change, we tried altering the environment a little bit and removing some of the plants and things that we thought might be stressing her out, but that didn't do anything either. Yesterday, we took a close look and saw that there were some white spots near the base of her gills and decided to take her out and tub her to see them a little better, and I'm wondering if they're actually a fungus or not. All of the pictures of fungus I've seen aren't at the base of the gills, but actually on the gills themselves. Any help y'all could provide would be amazing. We do weekly 30-40% water changes and test the water regularly. There's never been an ammonia/nitrite/nitrate spike that we've observed, and the temperature is normally kept below 65F, but as it's been warmer in the past couple of weeks, it's gotten closer to 70F, but never quite gotten there yet. Gimli hasn't reacted negatively to the slightly warmer temperatures, and I'm not sure if Myrtle seems to mind either, honestly. Myrtle's issues started before there were warmer temperatures, though, so I'm not sure if they're related. Thank you! [link] [comments]

Substrate question: Axolotl-safe sands? Posted: 07 Jul 2020 02:59 AM PDT Hi everyone! I'm still relatively new to the world of axies and to this sub, so please pardon any ignorance on my part. I'm hoping that you fine folks might be able to help me with a substrate dilemma. I have a 1-year old male axolotl in a 20 gallon tank. After having kept him in a bare-bottom tank with artificial plants/hides for a while, I've finally decided that it's time to upgrade to some pretty sand with live plants and driftwood. However, owning African clawed frogs has made me super wary of my critters eating EVERYTHING that they shouldn't, and I don't want him to gobble up his substrate and get hurt! I was hoping to use Flourite Black as a base layer in which to root plants, and then adding a softer, finer grain black sand on top. However, the finest black sand I can find is Imagitarium. While small, the grains look somewhat coarse and jagged rather than round and smooth... Does anyone have experience with using this safely, or know of any other black sands that I could look into? And is Flourite Black safe for axolotls, even if hidden under a secondary substrate layer? Finally, are there any aquatic plants that I should avoid? Any advice or tips will be greatly appreciated! The basics and even when you do the basics just try to do more research on the history of them or stuff like that for like a fun project. Thanks :) [link] [comments] |
