Posted: 07 Jul 2020 07:57 PM PDT So I have two mystery snails, one which I've bad for about 4-5 months now and is about the size of a quarter dollar (he's massive) and a little girl who we got about a month and a half ago. Last week she laid her first clutch and then last night she laid another. Does anyone know just how often she can keep laying eggs? [link] [comments]

Are care requirements for Mystery Snails and Japanese Trapdoor Snails similar? Posted: 07 Jul 2020 02:11 PM PDT I am setting up a 5 gallon planted tank--was going to get a mystery snail but now I'm thinking about Japanese trapdoor snails. All the internet articles I've read suggest 10 gallons for one of these snails, but I've also read in forums that people get away with mysteries in 5 gallons. I'm not going to have any fish--probably an amano shrimp and another low-bioload critter. It looks like JTS have longer lifespans, eat more algae (but I plan on also feeding repashy snello and veggies), and have similar personalities, but can also be a bit bigger than mysteries. Update: The internet can't seem to agree on how big JTS get. Aquatic Arts says up to 2 inches while other sites say 2-3 inches. I think I'll stick with a Mystery Snail for now and daydream of the day I get a bigger tank to have JTS or Rabbit Snails. [link] [comments]
A conversation about snail infestations and harm to non-pest snails Posted: 07 Jul 2020 10:13 AM PDT Hello good people, I'd like to start a conversation about your experiences and knowledge about pest snails inhabiting with non-pests. My experience was I bought a gold mystery snail which came with pond snail hitch hikers. Over time they grew in population and I was quickly falling behind on controlling population growth. NSFW TRIGGER WARNING The small, tiny pond snails would make home inside the mystery snail by crawling under her foot. She would clam up for days and clearly look unwell, not dormant. I kept eradicating the pond snail infestations but kept noticing as soon as my Goldie dealt with her invaders and finally come out for food, she would be attacked again in a similar fashion. Before she could eat she ended up clamping down in defense again. This went on for weeks as I even introduced assassins to my tank. I isolated the gold mystery snail and she healed up. I returned her to the tank where I thought my issue was mostly gone and it happened again in front of my eyes. Again, she clamped down in defense, and this time never woke up again. The infestation is still prevelant even with assassins, zuchinni traps, and daily removal of pests. My question about this experience leads me to ask, how in the hell did the snails survive at the pet store where they were clearly loaded with pest snails? I don't know much about snail behaviour, but does my explanation about defense make sense? Was my snail consistently stressed due to these little buggers crawling in her space? I would really really like to get some mystery snails in the future but I'm still very worried that my infestation isn't gone yet. Of course I will not be getting any until the pests are all gone due to my experience. I see many of you with large snail populations and lots of babies living among larger snails. Let's talk, is my experience something to worry about in the future? Do you have any experiences with pest snails killing or stressinh non-pest snails? Thank you in advance to everyone who participates. [link] [comments]

Mystery snail not fully opening? Posted: 07 Jul 2020 12:24 PM PDT Hi!! my golden apple snail has been acting weird this past week. They're usually zooming around eating everything, in a different spot every time I look. This past week he's been mostly curled up and sometimes half opening. He has been eating, yesterday I moved him to a bowl I have for his food and put food in there and he ate it but I didn't see him fully open to eat it. This morning he was still in that bowl (it's a short glass bowl, he usually goes in an out easily). I got him end of april/beginning of march so I don't think he's that old. Parameter: Temp- 78 Ammonia-0 nitrite-0 nitrate-0 I didn't check the hardness. could that be an issue? his shell seems ok [link] [comments]

About to dose antibiotics- what to do with snails? Posted: 07 Jul 2020 10:41 AM PDT I have 2 tanks I'm going to start dosing with Kanaplex due to strange fish deaths that I think are bacterial. However, I don't want to kill my mystery snails and assassin snails in the process. How do you all care for snails while treating tank illnesses? [link] [comments]
Mystery snail eating newborn ramshorn snails? Posted: 07 Jul 2020 08:01 AM PDT I have 5 mystery snails. They're all about the size of a nickel, except one of them which is bigger than a quarter. Recently I got some plants from a tank with ramshorns in it and they made their way into my tank. There were several of them everywhere, but over the past few days their population has declined to almost 0 without any intervention. Today, I saw my biggest snail (he's a pig) doing what looks like eating a baby ramshorn. Is that possible? [link] [comments] |
