- inheriting a koi pond and i have no clue where to start
- New pond, fish went in last night, I'm having a serious issue with 2 of the koi jumping out of the pond. They have both jumped at the corner of the pond where the Ventura (excuse my spelling) is located. Please let me know what needs to be done to keep the fish safe and stop them from jumping out.-J

inheriting a koi pond and i have no clue where to start Posted: 30 Jun 2020 11:54 PM PDT hello! i am new to this sub and the topic. my wife and i are in the process of buying a house and it has a concrete pond that already hosts some Koi. they were raised and cared for by the previous owners and their family. we're honored to be their new keepers but don't have a clue where to start. i imagine i should familiarize myself with the pond's pump and filtration system and assess how well it is doing. what's the right procedure for doing that? what should i be looking for mechanically? meaning, how do i assess the condition of the pump and the piping? same goes for aeration - i am not sure there is much aeration going on other than the water pump creating a water fall from spouts above the pond. is that enough? how do i know? what's the right pH for the water? how much algae should there be in the pond at any given time? zero? there's green stuff growing on the PVC pipes going to the pump/filter - is that algae, biofilm, or something else? when it comes to ecosystem balance, it seems the bacterial cultures are important to keep constant. is there a way to measure what's there already? is there an appropriate level? should i clean out the entire pond to give it a fresh start? if so, do i leave the green stuff generally populating the sides and pipes? or do i give it a good scrub? during the home inspection, we noticed the filters for the pump were suspended in bleach for cleaning - is this common/appropriate? what's the right way to check on the health of the Koi? i apologize for the onslaught of questions. any help/guidance is greatly appreciated. New koi haven’t eaten yet it’s been 3 days Posted: 30 Jun 2020 12:25 PM PDT I got three small koi on Saturday and they haven't eaten yet. Any suggestions? It has a few plants along the surface they could be eating roots/leafs of. [link] [comments] |
