Evaporation

Sorry to flood the forum with newbie questions, but I was wondering what the general practice is for evaporation. I live in Florida and my house gets hot quickly (never below 76°F indoors most of the year). My houseplant propagation jars usually evaporate a good inch every couple days.

For an unsealed jar, would it be best to cover the opening during the day to prevent too much evaporation? Does evaporation lead to more frequent water changes? I'd love to hear some tips and advice!
