They're enjoying the new plant! I hope they don't tear it to shreds though.

Cleaning frequency?

Posted: 02 Jun 2020 07:48 PM PDT

I have a 55 gallon, lightly planted tank with a 3 year old common goldfish and 3 young fancy goldfish. I recently changed my substrate to sand and with the waste sitting on top of the sand now, I've gotten into the routine of vaccuming it out every other day. This usually results in me replacing 2 gallons of water or so every time. I also do a 10% change every weekend. Can this be bad for my tank? Am I doing it too much? It doesn't seem to bother the fish.

Help, ammonia and nitrite levels too high!

Posted: 02 Jun 2020 02:28 PM PDT

I have 1 blackmoor goldfish in a 72 litre tank with several plants (java fern, anubias and amazon sword), we moved him 3 weeks ago from a smaller 15 litre tank. There is a filter with an oxygen hose also. And we change his water once every week

Rick was getting white patches on his body and a cloudy eye, we have just done some tests on the water with these results:

Results: pH: 8.2 Ammonia: 0.5 Nitrite: 1.0ppm Nitrate 10ppm

I have just done a 25% water change as recommended online but I really dont know what to do next to reduce these levels, very worried any advice would be great!

Company for Fancy Goldfish

Posted: 02 Jun 2020 04:37 PM PDT

I bought two fancy goldfish from a store to put in my 20 gallon tank. Long story short: i had fish for a while but never goldfish, I didnt do enough research, the shop owner said it would be fine, then I found out that 20 is enough for one, certainly not two.

An ammonia spike and some chasing led to the larger goldfish being given back to the shop. It sucked cos I loved the little guy and they thrived for about 6 months but I figured I would only get more attached and that would lead to me making the incorrect decision to keep both, which would stress them out and eventually kill one or both.

I'm aware that goldfish are social fish and would prefer to be kept with others (hence my purchasing two initially).

However, given their high bioload, will low bioload inhabitants like shrimp and snails fulfil that need and provide stimulation?

If not, is there anything I can add to keep my remaining dude company? Dont want to overstock his tank but hate the thought of him getting depressed now his mate has gone.

Your suggestions would be much appreciated.

Tl;dr: 20 gallon tank. One fancy goldfish, two amano and four ramshorn snails. Heavily planted. Fluval u2 filter. Can/should I add anything else to keep goldfish company? If so, what?

Goldfish temperature

Posted: 02 Jun 2020 01:41 PM PDT

Hi! My goldfish heaters are set to 20 degrees, but the heat lately has made the tanks go to 23 in the morning and in the evening 25-26 like they are right now. Is this dangerous? I know it isn't ideal and they don't like it but I don't think there's any way I can stop it from happening. I might get blackout blind things for the outside of the house. Let me know!

Cycling Tank

Posted: 02 Jun 2020 11:44 AM PDT

I've been cycling my tank and it's been around a week. Over the past like 3-4 days, I keep seeing the same amount of ammonia and nitrites and for nitrates, I think those are also the same. Everyday I check the water parameters and I also add some flakes and some BB ( Seachem stability). What should I do now?

Ammonia: 0.25-0.50 ppm Nitrites: 0.25 ppm Nitrates: around 10 ppm
