HELP: Is my Cray dying or just molting? Been sluggish for >2 weeks Posted: 06 Jun 2020 05:42 PM PDT Hello folks! I have what I think is a red swamp crayfish who came into the local Petco mixed in with their feeder goldfish. Got him for free because he was a tagalong, so no real concept of the breed. His name is Sir Pinchington, Pinchy for short, and it's been fun watching him grow. He's molted several times since I got him 1.5 years ago, usuallly he gradually darkens and reddens, then molts into a soft green before darkening again. Here is a picture showing his feistiness as he watches and waits for food to appear And, just for the record, Here's one more of him standing atop his log cave The last few weeks he has been very sluggish in his PVC "cave" that I made for him, slumped down and only perking up when I disturb him for water changes or dropping food in - but he doesn't maniacally pounce on his food like he used to, instead eating it when I'm not watching. He also doesn't move much if at all - I've left pellets outside his doorway and they end up disappearing, but I never see him move to get them aside from maybe twitching an antennae. At first I just assumed he was molting as usual, but it's been some time now and I don't know what I did wrong. Here's a picture of him in his current condition, it's hard to get one of him because he isn't out and about. He's much redder than usual, and isn't holding his claws up or feeling around as he sits So, here are my tank parameters: He has a 20 gallon all to himself (and his bladder snails). I feed him pretty much whatever I have around - Red or Green grapes are a favorite of his, as well as Shrimp Pellets, Algae Wafers, a dark green moss I have in a different tank, Hornwort, and even bits of freeze-dried leeches or nightcrawlers left over from last years' fishing bait. I usually feed him about 2 shrimp pellets worth of food a day, on average. Sometimes I don't feed him, sometimes I spoil him with an entire green grape, it depends on how he's behaving. His tank pH is roughly 8.2, we have well water with decent hardness and I've given him Cuttle Bones and bits of crushed oyster shells to help with calcium and pH buffering (He had a really hard time molting before and then I found out our pH was a bit low for their preferred range). I have his tank at ~74 degrees with a heater, he has a big volcano air bubbler, a solid filter, NO ammonia or Nitrite, and pretty low Nitrate of <10 ppm considering how much he poops normally. I do water changes every ~2 weeks or so. Based on when we got him, I figure he's maybe 2 years old? Not sure how long Crayfish live but I've seen anywhere from 3-8 years in captivity so I don't think it's old age. He's around 4-5 inches long depending on what he does with his pinchers. That should cover it all - does anyone have advice for me, or ideas for why he might not be doing well? Is he just taking a really long time to molt? [link] [comments] | ||
Posted: 06 Jun 2020 02:09 PM PDT Pretty simple question, probably not a simple answer. I'm wanting black substrate for my white crayfish and I'm considering switching to sand (He's in a different tank while I switch). I know crayfish like to dig and move substrate and that sand is more difficult to clean but I guess mainly what I'm asking is for your opinions on which you prefer and any issues you may have with either.
