advice for a beginner

Posted: 05 May 2020 09:45 PM PDT

im a total beginner but ive been researching a bit on how to set up a nano tank walstad style. my plan is a 2 gallon tank, around 6 cherry reds, some sort of snail, and loaded with plants. a 6500w light also seems like a good idea so the plants do really well. substrate will be planting soil (since ive read the fertilizer/chicken manure in that is good, still a bit unsure) with a top layer of sand or gravel.

my main questions have to do with cycling stuff

if i go with soil, will i not need a bacteria powder to start cycling it since it would already be in the soil

and

with water top ups and changes, does anything have to be done regarding the bacteria? i saw someone say that additional bacteria should be added with each so everything stays healthy, or will it just regulate itself?

any other tips and stuff are really appreciated
