What on earth is going on with my fish...

Posted: 04 May 2020 11:19 PM PDT

Hello everyone. I've posted here over the past few months trying to determine what is going on with my fish to no avail.

He's a comet with a big veiled tail.

For the past two months now my fish has been experiencing blood red patches in different places on his body on a near weekly basis.

These red spots will sometimes appear on his fins, sometimes on his body.

I have performed multiple primed water changes. I have constantly tested parameters and they are all in check.

The red spots will appear and disappear typically every week.

This morning he had one on his fin. It migrated towards his gills and as of now it is gone from his gills and barely on his fin.

I can not figure out what is going on. His behaviour is completely normal. Parameters are all in check and these patches keep appearing and disappearing. He has no visible signs of any disease or fungus or parasites. There's no other fish living with him.

Does anyone have any idea what could be going on?

This all started after I introduced a pleco months ago (who died four days later) along with some plants. I'm not sure what kind of plants they are. I bought them at the pet store. They kind of look like dandelions. There's a bit of brown algae in the tank.

I've got an activated charcoal filter running with a chunk of filter medium and an air stone. Fish is always hungry foraging around and always following me around. Seems totally normal.

Ive gotten to the point where I'm not even really worried any more as he seems fine but I still want to figure out what's going on as it obviously can't be anything good.

Looking for pre-advice on a Ranchu tank

Posted: 05 May 2020 05:17 AM PDT

Hey guys! I hope my post is ok here, I've always been into aquariums but i begun getting my own around Christmas with my first nano tank and a Betta which i'm sure is probably a common thing to do. I made sure I did my research and he's living a super happy life building his bubble nests with his live plants and decent water quality that i check regularly. My Birthday is coming up and i'd already been hinting to my wife that I was interested in attempting a second tank to run alongside my Betta tank :). After looking around at lots of different fish I landed on wanting two Ranchu fish! They look gorgeous and I think would look fantastic on the opposite end of the room to my Betta tank.

I've had a look online in the last week or so trying to soak up as much information as I possibly can on the best way to care for them, suitable tank sizes, filtration, substrate ect but there seems to be large amounts of conflicting information all around the web moreso than what I had when preparing for Mooncake my Betta. So! When i had problems with sorting out my Betta tank I hit that subreddit and got loads of great advice so I'm hoping it's ok with everyone here if i do something similar and just ask a few questions to prepare myself and see if it's suitable for me to setup a tank for 2 Ranchu (they are social fish and like a friend right?)

The Tank! I was thinking something like this would be suitable ? https://www.allpondsolutions.co.uk/aquarium/fish-tanks/nano-and-small/ultra-clear-140l/ its a 140L which should be around 30G if my math is correct?

Filtration - https://fluvalaquatics.com/uk/product/u3-underwater-filter/ something like this?

Anything specific I should know about Ranchu themselves to ensure success would be great or even seeing setups of something similar like a double Ranchu tank would be fantastic! Thanks guys <3 have a lovely day.

When you're out with your tall friend

I bought them all as fan tails, but am wondering if the ones with lumpier heads are orandas instead? Two of them have totally flat heads, and two with a bump. Any clues? Thanks

This big boy seems to have swim bladder issues, and so i've put him inside (he resides in a pond). Do you have any advice on what i should do while i wait for a few days of not feeding him?

Do he need more air?

I got a Black moor goldfish today he's shiny and looks healthy and is in a 10 gallon while we finish our 1755 gallon pond. I cannot tell if he's gasping at the surface or looking for food. How often is to frequently for coming to the surface?

Carpets with Goldfish

Posted: 04 May 2020 03:43 PM PDT

Is it possible? I have a decently sized goldfish at this point but his tank is really sad looking. I would love to attempt a carpet or really half carpet for him made of Java moss tied to a mesh. If anyone has any better suggestions i'm definitely open to it.

Keep in mind this will be a low tech planted tank bc i poor, but I'm going to try my best. In addition if he does tear the carpet apart what could I use to replace it in terms of cosmetic appeal. (That's safe for goldfish ofc)

KH

Posted: 04 May 2020 08:43 AM PDT

Hi,

I was mesuring the water parameters with this new kit i got from JBL and now i'm really lost.

I have a 20 gallon tank with no fish at the moment because i'm just cycling it (with the seachem stability) and i was doing the KH test (if you own the one from this brand you'll know you have to pour drops into a 5ml container until it turns orange) and basically the instructions tell me that each drop i add means 1 german degree aka ºdH and I got 6 drops wich means my KH is at 6 german degrees (ºdH).

I can't find anywhere the parameters that are correct in german degrees so if any of you know and can help me I would really apreciate it.

I'm planning on getting a goldfish and I dont know what's a safe KH for my baby.

Thanks again...

<3
