Can you believe these came from the “feeder” tank? So excited for these guys to move into their new pond soon.

What got me started in the fish hobby, goldfish

Here’s a picture of an Oranda I drew!

Here's 2 of my goldfish tattoos. The pic isn't that great because it's on the back of my leg and a hard angle to get. But you guys get the idea.

Cycling, two filters?

Posted: 15 May 2020 12:26 AM PDT

Hi! So I am currently setting up and cycling a 30 gallon for a baby Ranchu (who I will not purchase until the tank is ready) and it has really really high ammonia like 8PPM, so I added a sponge filter as well as the over the back filter and I also began feeding the tank slightly less. I have not cycled a tank this large before. I am dosing with beneficial bacteria (API QuickStart) every other day. I also just did a 50 percent water change, how often should I water change when trying to establish a cycle? Thank you guys as always.

Help with fin rot root cause

Help with fin rot root cause

I would like assistance identifying the likely root cause of fin rot in my comet goldfish, as I don't think the common causes of overcrowding/overfeeding/poor water quality are at play, but of course I could be wrong and have not dealt with this before so would appreciate your thoughts.

The fish with fin rot: 1.5 year old comet, who was a fair fish and has been in this tank since about 1 month old. For the first month we had her in a 10 gallon tank; during that time I also nursed her back from serious ammonia burns which she had when we got her. She was tiny and orange colored when we got her. Now she is quite large now (maybe 4-5 inches long?) and has turned white over the last 2 months (fairly rapidly). Her behavior has been totally normal, but I've noticed a slowly progressing rot of her tail fin over the last 3-4 weeks.

1.5 year old comet, rot on tail fin

Closer image of the tail rot. The white spots are on the glass, not the fish.

The tank: 65 gallon with a Fluval 404 filter running for about 1.5 years, with this1 comet, 1 platy, and 3 nerite snails. Only major change in the life of the tank was the conversion from gravel to sand substrate about 6 months ago. The only death in the tank was a 2nd platy, who died 2 months ago after getting caught in a plastic plant; I don't believe she was sick but always liked to hide in one spot and unfortunately got stuck apparently trying to get out. There is a big piece of driftwood and some plastic plants, plus an air stone. The platy is not showing any signs of fin rot, nor other issues.

Water parameters: I test every several weeks and consistently are:

  • pH 7.4
  • Temp 72
  • Ammonia 0
  • Nitrite 0
  • Nitrate 10 ppm

Tank cleaning: I used to religiously clean the tank monthly with gravel vac (1/2 the substrate each time) and 30% water changes. Since converting to sand, I've had a lot more trouble vacuuming the substrate without sucking up the sand itself, so have been cleaning the tank more like every 2 months, but continue to check the water params ever few weeks and they have not deviated at all. I add Prime, Stability, and salts (3 tablespoons for a 30% water change) during every water change.

Food: twice a day they get a small amount of Bug Bites Goldfish Formula, plus a small amount of Omega One goldfish flakes. They get 2 cooked peas every week or two for a treat instead of a regular meal. Neither food is expired and both have been purchased within the last year.

What I've done so far:

  • I did a 30% water change and good cleaning 2 weeks ago, but the rot has progressed further (the pictures I posted are as of last night)
  • Last night I did a 50% water change, very thorough tank and filter cleaning, and performed a 5 minute 3% salt bath in 1 gallon of aquarium water; she handled it just as predicted... rolled over a bit but always perked up, and very quickly returned to normal upon being returned to her tank.
  • I also reorganized the tank decorations last night
  • Starting about a week ago I also have started rotating Repashy Super Gold into the feeding routine

My theories:

  • The tank seems sufficiently large per guidelines, it's definitely not overcrowded
  • I don't think I'm overfeeding; I feed 2x per day and the food is (or at least could be) consumed within 2 minutes... sometimes they don't find everything because the pellets sink...
  • I think the food is good quality and not too old/expired. Is the diet varied enough?
  • The water parameters have not changed at all for over a year, they are always excellent. But, is my reduced cleaning schedule causing issues even without a detectable change in water params?
  • Is it possible this isn't fin rot, and it's actually something else, like an injury? She used to sit with her tail near an air stone... maybe she rubbed / scratched it?

BTW if you want to see a video of the salt dip. Not much to see here, but she did exactly what was explained online ... started rolling over, but then quickly perked up when gently touched. See 30 seconds in.

Can someone please tell me the specific differences between, sarasa, shubunkin, and comet goldfish? I diagram would be great.

Posted: 14 May 2020 06:30 PM PDT

I just feel like they all look the same? Like I'm pretty sure that I bought both comet and sarasa goldfish in the beginning and the only reason I can tell them apart is because the two sarasa are dominantly white among mostly orange comets.

Have this oranda with fin rot in a separate tank, treating with pimafix and melafix. Any other suggestions that might help it pull through would be much appreciated.

Canister filters?

Posted: 14 May 2020 02:38 PM PDT

I have a 125 gallon with two goldfish and a plecostamous. For as long as I've had this tank I've used two tetra ex70's and I'm more than ready for an upgrade with proper filtration. I know absolutely nothing about canister filters, how they work, which one I should get, how to maintain them, how to set them up, nothing.

Tell me everything you know and recommend some good ones. I'm trying not to spend more than $250 at the most. Also feel free to link some videos or websites with good info.

Some questions I have are:

Can I use a filter made for 100 gallons on my 125?

If I get a filter made for more than 125 gallons will it preform better?

Do they need to be changed out like regular filters do?

Do I need to cycle it before I take out the old filters and replace it?

I would also like to say the reason I got by for so long with less than adequate filters is because I did changes once a week and changed out the filter cartridges every 2-4 weeks, I'm hoping the canister filter will be less maintenance.

the dumbest question you will read

Posted: 14 May 2020 12:32 PM PDT

Hi, i'm already warning you this is a dumb question but my overthinking ass is freaking out about this.

So i did a water change on my tank and after dumping the tab water in i added the amount of prime needed to make the water safe, straight after that i added a some aquarium salt, after that some stability (not that much tho, it's just to help a bit) and i never do this but today i dosed some melafix becuase i think i'm having issues with slime in tank and fish and better be safe than sorry).

After doing all this i noticed i did it really quickly and one step right after the other and i can't help but think that the fact that i added so meany things is going to mess up my tank or make inefective some of the products i added such as prime.

There is absolutely no science behind argument but somehow i feel like maybe the fact that i added melafix, prime, stability and salt together is going to for example make the prime not work, or some shit like that.

I want to know if any of you think that my tank it's okay or if i actually should be concerned about what's in my tank. Like i don't want not safe water for my goldfish running around, or the melafix not working well beacuse of other products. They all say in the label that they don't harm bacteria, plants, animals or the fish (obviously dosed correctly) but i still am scared.

Opinions?

Thanks and i hope you are all safe in these hard times <3

Is this ich, some other problem or nothing to worry about? Shipped fish arrived tue, proper acclimation, 0 ammonia & nitrites, 10PPM nitrates & stable 8.2 PH. It's the black moor behind the first black moor. Spot is on lower part of the tail fin.

Rehoming needed for two Black Moors! Located in Bay Area, CA.

Posted: 14 May 2020 09:37 AM PDT

Hello all,

Sadly, I'm in need of rehoming for my two Broadtail Black Moors. I've been meaning to purchase a bigger tank (was eyeing 125 gallon) when we moved but due to the uncertainty right now I think it might be best to rehome them to a good home where they will be happier. Please help me rehome them!

I'm located in the Bay Area, CA and can deliver them. If you don't have a spare tank for them, I can provide one! I'll throw in the rest of their Rephasy Super Gold food, tap water conditioner, etc. All completely for free to you!

Gravel v glass bottom

Posted: 14 May 2020 01:39 AM PDT

I don't want to get sand for my goldfish tank because the siphon that I have is not good with sand, is it better to have gravel or to have it just be a glass bottom tank?
