Quarantine is preventing me from making more jarrariums, so I decided to draw some of my favorites!

NZ rock pool/saltwater jarrarium - help? Advice?

Posted: 18 Apr 2020 03:49 AM PDT

Hi all! I recently joined this sub to see all the cool jarrariums around. With NZ in lockdown, I finally started a jarrarium based on the rock pools located on the Wellington South Coast (the beach is walking distance).

My first jar I didn't get the balance quite right/I closed the jar when I should've left it open. My second is going great and I'm really pleased with it - I'll attach photos on a comment. It's a 2.65L jar (.7 US gallons)

I'm so in love with my jarrarium I actually want to expand it and I've found a tiny fish tank online that's 13L (3.4 US gallons).

Before I commit to it though, I want to ask the experts! I've done a bit of looking around but it seems that most advice is for freshwater jars with shrimp, small betta tanks, etc; maybe I've not looked in the right places but information is scant about rock pool jars.

Is this an okay idea? I'm not looking to have fish or starfish (or molluscs), as I doubt I'd be able to meet their more complicated needs. I'm hoping to be able to have a few anenomes, whatever tiny crustaceans come with the sand and water, and sea snails. Would they be able to happily balance together, do you think? And what ratio of sand, water, and sea plants would be a good place to start from?

Thanks in advance!

My first jarrarium. Not sure of the types of moss(NW Florida), but the tall plant in the back left is sweet fennel that I just found, and I believe the plant in the middle is brittle bladderfern. Some of the pictures moss could be Schreber’s big red stem moss.

Caddisfly larvae, caught them both near the surface. Notice their cases made of sand and small stones. Finally caught a usable picture of them now that the water is clearing up.

Everything sourced in a forest. What happens if I add more water? Will plants survive? Any chance to see natural life showing up?

Hydra on a stick in my shallow pond jar. He walked around the end of that stick all morning feeding on tiny copepods.

These are two collected jars about 48hrs apart. Forgive the marks on the jars, I use sharpie on the glass to monitor growth in my jars to make sure I have a good ecosystem and to circle areas of interest. Sealed 4/14 and 4/12 respectively.
