One of my many ivy-obsessed open jarrariums: this one includes some wild ground ivy & moss with a small shark jaw.

Jarrariums and light sources

Hi! I am looking to get some plants in my apartment and I love the idea of making my own jarrarium or terrarium.

The problem is that I'm in a weird east facing apartment that will get direct sun for a couple of hours and then the sun goes behind the building and I guess it could be considered partial light at that point (?), but minimal. Plus I live in Vancouver BC where we don't see sun for half of the year.

All plants I've had die because I'm not sure what will grow in these conditions. I can put them on a window that gets a few more hours of sun but it is quite cold near the windows. I had a fly trap that lasted a couple of years there, but barely. So I'm here because I notice a lot of jarrariums posted here seem to use artificial light sources.

I was looking for more info on how people use the artificial light sources (are they just for show, is it the only light the plant gets or just supplemental?). If anyone has any specific recommendations for my situation I'd really appreciate it!

Cheers!

I’m waiting on my jars to arrive in the mail, but in the meantime I tried my best at a terrarium in a recycled coffee bottle. It’s my first attempt at this and I didn’t have any mesh I could use to separate the dirt and rock but hopefully it’ll be okay!
