Self-sustaining ecosystem

Posted: 27 Apr 2020 02:43 PM PDT

Hello, (This is going to be a long read, I like writing and I hope you enjoy my post and that I can learn from someone.)

So a few months ago I tried to make a self sustaining ecosystem, the process of putting in all the plants en flower in such manner it could be called art was truly enlightening.

First the jar was filled with pebbles and a few lava stones... That submerged the stones with water, on top a soil base consisting of pot dirt from the store mixed with dry dirt from the garden. Threw in various little insects, ants... A worm, perhaps a beetle, ladybugs, etc... Yadiyadiya, les plants et des fleurs... E voilà!

Now screw that... Fast forward a couple of weeks... It all burned, too humid... Too hot in the sun & it turned almost literally in hell.

I then left the jar open outside and forgot about it, even more weeks... Months go by and suddenly I noticed a huge increase in plant life, mostly bacteria and moss...Dozens of springtails and a spider with a web you can imagine as the clouds in the jar were feasting. Sooo... I closed it again...

Fast forward a couple of weeks, it all seems to be doing great... The spider is enjoying being on top of the food chain, now feasting on mosquitoes apparently? Springtails bred to an army to clean the whole place up! Snails sliding on the glass and in the wet soil...

Now I wish it didn't have to screw it but I did... Satan cursed the place again and left it in the sun to burn almost all the springtails, nearly blew up the snail and scorched some leaves on the sun side due to magnifying properties of glass :/. So I fucked up!

Although there are still same springtails alive that managed to stay cool in the soil and the mosquitoes seemingly survived too...

What will happen to the jar if I keep it closed? Would anything else beside algea grow after another couple of weeks?

Ps. I could show pictures of the jar if anyone wants them.

Suggestions for a fish bowl?

Posted: 27 Apr 2020 11:33 AM PDT

I found a fishbowl in a shed and I want to make a jarrarium-esque thing. What kinds of things can i put in it? Obviously no fish, but would ghost shrimp or other very small crustaceans be okay? What kinds of snails are good? Plants? Other life forms? All suggestions welcomed!
