where to start for my first jar?

i've always been fascinated by the aquatic jars, especially ones that are sealed and still manage to stay clean. I don't know where to start though, and was wondering if anyone had any tips, or things they wish they'd known when they started?

my mother used to have a sealed aquatic jar with a snail in it that lasted 3 years, and was never opened. is that possible to recreate? what supplies do i need?
