My butterfly moor came in yesterday from Goldfish Island! She's even more stunning than she looked online (not to mention that adorable belly)

How to CULL 5-week-old Goldfish Fry

Growing out a small fish or getting a big one when adding to a group? What's "worth it" for expensive fish?

Posted: 25 Apr 2020 05:28 PM PDT

My current goldie squad members are around the 3 to 5 inch body range (give or take a little for the tail). I am not sure if I want to buy a tiny goldfish to grow out, or get a big one.

How much size difference before it might get outcompeted by the resident 4 goldfish?

Small babies to grow out are cheaper but I am not sure how well the small baby is gonna grow.

My current extremely small sample size from local fish stores is:

  • $5 ryukin goldfish - 1 is a runt that grew maybe half an inch in two years, 1 grew better, but still not as good as the next price tier.
  • $8 oranda goldfish- grew bigger than the $5 goldfish, but their wens aren't great. One of the two grew almost as large as my $20 one.
  • $20 thai oranda goldfish- biggest chonker with a nice wen, suffered catastrophic swim bladder failure and dropsy and died.

The $50-$100 goldfish online look really nice, but how do they do in longevity/health? Anyone with more experience able to chip in on this? I had a pretty bad run with some Thai bettas being more expensive but having worse longevity than the bettas from Petco, so I just kind of have a niggling worry in the back of my mind about "what if I buy a $50 fish it just drops dead in less than a year?" I don't expect every goldfish to max out their time on earth, but I want one with good chances, I guess. Maybe I should skip import fish, maybe California water really hates Thailand-grown fish?

At the moment I am not sure if I plan to buy local or ship a fish in. Kind of depends on what my local fish stores have stocked, how much shelter-in-place fidgeting drives me insane, and how inclined I am to pay for overnight shipping.

And one other question is whether or not a telescope eye can hang with ryukins and orandas? I saw a few demekins that caught my eye. But I might just go for another oranda or ryukin. Haven't really decided yet.

Baby Orandas?

Posted: 25 Apr 2020 07:40 PM PDT

Could anyone recommend an Oranda breeder that sells babies? I've seen red caps at pet stores that are about an inch long. That's the size I want to start from but I am looking for black or calico varieties.

I've found a couple of sellers that seem legit with beautiful fish, but they all are already about 6" long.

This will be my first goldfish tank and my heart is set on keeping Orandas. I am interested in seeing them grow and watch their colors change which is why I'm hoping to start with younger fish. If you think this is a bad idea and it would be better to get older fish then please let me know. I just don't want to miss out on all of their growth in their early years.

Feedback on our tank? re-homed 12 goldfish from an outdoor pond, want to make sure we're doing the best we can for them! See comments for specific info on the setup, thank you!

Is this breeding behavior in the blackout comet? Or being just plain playful?

What foods should you Not feed your goldfish?

Posted: 25 Apr 2020 12:44 AM PDT

I'm sure there are a ton of things ... but maybe in the realm of veggies and fruits? I overcooked my mung beans and was thinking about feeding them to her. Would that be ok?
