These two are mine, just rehomed them from a guy at work who didn't want them anymore.

2 Orandas in a 40 gallon tank?

Posted: 22 Apr 2020 08:23 PM PDT

Hey there,

Im thinking about getting two thai orandas in a 40 gallon tank. Ive done a lot of research to make sure everything is correct. According to the wiki 2 fancy Goldfish in a 40 gallon tank is OK. But I've also read that this seems to be the bare minimum, as orandas are one of the larger fancies. Will this set up be manageable in terms of bioload and the hapiness of the fish? Bonus question: is there a good place online to get orandas? My local pet store is not good.

Thanks.

Goldfish problems! Please help

Posted: 22 Apr 2020 10:49 PM PDT

Disclaimer: I have had experience with koi, betas and oscar's but I've never owned a goldfish. I did my research online and took advice from the pet store lady :/

A few months ago I bought a fancy calico goldfish and put it in a 20 gallon tank with normal fish stuff (rocks, filter, plants & structure.) The fish was doing very well health wise but seemed a little stressed. The woman at the pet store reccomend that I get more goldfish to make it more comfortable seeing as the goldfish had never been in a tank by itself and that made sense to me at the time because most of the websites online had said that goldfish can be in tanks with other goldfish/ are social fish. The other day I bought 2 orandas (reccomend by the pet store lady,) and put them in the tank with the first one. After about a day or so the bigger of the new fish started acting aggressive to the two other fish so I temporarily separated them. The calico goldfish has also been looking a little pale. I really want my fish to live a long and happy life. Probably the last time I listen to the people who work at the pet store.

Should I separate them permanently or is there something else I should do? Other tips and advice would be very much appreciated.

Outdoor above ground pond

Posted: 22 Apr 2020 01:23 PM PDT

I live in Minnesota so it can get pretty cold, I'm wondering the logistics of an above ground pond out on my porch. Mostly about equipment that can tolerate freezing temperatures like oxygenators and things to keep the ice open

Medicine Stock?

Posted: 22 Apr 2020 01:16 PM PDT

Hello,

Recently I've caught my bigger common goldfish flashing from time to time- not much, but enough to alarm me. I've looked for ich on them but can't find a trace of anything aside from occasional flashing. Nitrates, Nitrite and Ammonia close to 0 (I do water changes at max 3 days apart), pH 7.5-7.8 (hard to pin down). Tank is 55 gal long for 2 commons (they are still small as they are only a few months old, I want to build them a 100+ gal tank/tv stand when I can leave the house to get materials, but that's challenging at the moment.)

Since I've never treated my fish I don't have much experience with medicine. Not having anything on hand to treat ich bothered me so what do you guys recommend I get? Here's what I already have: 1) API Pimafix (fungal infections), 2) API E.M. Erythromycin (bacterial fish disease)

I should be getting a betta soon as well, so I wanted to pick up some api stress coat+. Is there a chance just giving my goldfish stress coat+ can help with the root cause of flashing- again it's not much or often but it spooked me to know how unprepared I might be to deal with potential problems. What fish meds should I have on hand?

Algae bloom

Posted: 22 Apr 2020 03:30 PM PDT

I have a 55 gallon planted tank with four fancy goldfish in it. Yes I know it's a bit overstocked, but I do 50% water changes twice a week. the plant has a root tab in it to help it grow. It recently started developing an algae bloom after I started using the seachem substrate for plants. Is there a way to get rid of the algae without killing the goldfish or plants?
