Welcome to r/bettafish!

Click this link to view our CARESHEET

Quick synopsis of caresheet:

  • Minimum tank size is 5 gallons (about 20 liters) for a regular sized betta, and 10 gallons (about 40 liters) for a king/giant betta

  • Bettas need an adjustable heater and a thermometer to ensure water temperature stays between 78-82°F or about 26-28°C

  • Bettas need a cycled tank- this requires a filter

  • Bettas need silk or live plants and hidey holes with no sharp edges.

  • Bettas have a special organ, the labyrinth organ, allowing them to breathe air. They require constant access to air at the top of the tank.

  • Bettas will jump- it is best to have a tank with a lid

Quick synopsis of the wiki:

  • Contains info on basic betta care, diseases, potential tank mates, tail types/coloring, differences between males/females, ordering bettas, moving with bettas, setting up sororities and MORE!

  • This most likely has the answers to your questions. Feel free to ask questions if you are confused or aren't sure about something.

WEEKLY HELP POST

This is the place to ask anything and everything about bettas. Be sure to include your water parameters(ammonia/nitrite/nitrate,) tank size, how long the specific issue has been occurring, and some pictures if there is something which requires a diagnosis (e.g. fin rot/melt, velvet, dropsy.)

How do I upload pictures?

Go to imgur.com and select "New Post". Add all the clear pictures you have so we can better determine what is going on with your fish. It is recommended you set the album to private if you don't want weird comments. Click upload. From there, click the share button- if you are on mobile, hit "copy to clipboard" and paste the link into your comment on here. If on desktop, copy the link and paste it here.

For those new to technology- ctrl + c is copy, ctrl + v is paste.

To have your link like this, put these [ ] brackets around the text you want to show, with no space before the first word or after the last word, and without adding a space after the second bracket, use parentheses ( ) for the link, with no spaces between the parentheses or the link itself.

Be sure to read our rules before posting or commenting.

If your question was not answered yesterday, please feel free to post again!

Ask away!

I'm wondering if anyone can tell me why my betta fish, Jerome, has changed color so drastically?

Posted: 27 Apr 2020 10:05 AM PDT

This is Frank. He was at my dads office and nobody was taking care of him because of a merger. My dad asked if I wanted him and I said yes! His tiny tank was so dirty I couldn’t even see him, it smelled horrible! He’s getting treated and has a nice big clean cycled tank! He’s a big guy too!

Hello,

A couple months ago I went to a pet store that was offering customers a free beta fish if they spent 50$. Anyway I put my little buddy on my desk at work in a 1L room temperature tap water tank with nothing but a single bamboo stalk. I was feeding him 10 pellets of dollar store fish food x2 daily. I was cleaning his water 100% once a week but I grumbled that his tank was always really dirty. After two months I noticed he was lethargic and mostly hanging out at the top for air. People thought he was dead. He began to develop fin rot.

There was a lot of conflicting information online but I turned to this subreddit community and lurked. Oscar now lives in a 10 gallon tank with a heater. I tone his water and do 25% changes regularly. I put in a little hiding house and a fake plant. I feed him one pellet at a time, 4 pellets total once a day. He's got a neon light that switches off after twelve hours.

I know it's not as good as some of the pro tanks I've seen here but I've seen such a difference! In such a short time too. He's active. He's more colourful. No fin rot. BIG BUBBLE NESTS! Before I didn't know what they were so I destroyed them thinking they were stagnant water.

Amazing. Thanks everyone. FYI Oscar the betta is home self isolating like a responsable fish.

Stowaway snagged one of BettaDad's adult sized pellets during feeding time. The little sass then swam around the tank like this, until he realised his dad wasn't fussed at all because he was busy eating all the fry micropellets I'd put in for him...
