Am I doing it right?

Posted: 30 Apr 2020 03:41 PM PDT

Hi all!

Quick question... I've been cycling a new tank for my first axie for about 2 weeks now. Been checking the levels and all seems good. After doing some reading, I think I might have been cycling it wrong. Apparently, I was suppose to be putting in Ammonia to help it cycle correctly (which, as you can guess, I haven't been doing).

Long story short, should I be dosing Ammonia into the tank to cycle it correctly? And if so, do I need to start the process all over again?

Thanks for your help in advance!

New Axolotl

Posted: 30 Apr 2020 01:42 PM PDT

I just got a juvenile Leucistic Axolotl and already had the tank ready for her. I've been cycling for almost 2 weeks but ammonia is still at .25. Nitrate is somewhere between 5.0 ppm and 10 ppm and my nitrites are at 0. Her ph is also at 7.6 (I matched it with the water she came in) Her temperatures at 68 degrees, I know I need to continue doing water changes everyday to get rid of the ammonia/nitrates but I just want to make sure she's okay. I acclimated her for almost 20 minutes but she hasn't moved around a lot, she swam around for a little bit and now she's hiding under her cave. She also has a sponge filter that doesn't make any noise and/or have a strong water flow so I can't imagine it could be that. I'm new to this and did as much research as I could in the past 2 week, but nothing seems to answer my question as to why shes so still or maybe that's normal when you introduce them to a tank for the first time ? I'm just not sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is my axolotl a dwarf or just stunted?

Posted: 30 Apr 2020 01:18 PM PDT

I've had my axie for almost two years, I purchased him when he was about 2 inches long. He's on a mixed diet of earthworms and pellets, he's super healthy and active. The 20g tank levels have been moderated and it's been fully cycled since I got him. Correct temperature, correct levels, everything is good :) unfortunately he stopped growing when he was about 4.5 inches long. He still has the appearance of a juvenile, he never really got that plumpy look that the older ones get. He doesn't have the hunchback look of a dwarf either. Is mine just unusually small or should I look out for something else that might be wrong? I was planning on getting him a bigger tank and a buddy axolotl one day but I'm worried that I won't be able to get him a friend because of how small he is. Any advice?

Axolotl with swollen, milky eye

Axolotl with swollen, milky eye

Now I know the photo isn't the greatest, but my phone is kinda broken, and I have to use the front camera, so let me try to explain. I got this guy (or gal) from a pet shop about 8 months ago, so I don't know how old he is, but he's fully grown and certainly the largest axolotl I've ever seen in real life. During the last month or so, one of his eyes have gone milky white. It's swollen, compared to the other eye, that is completely fine. Theres a cloudy white spot in the middle, and above the eye, a pink spot that kinda looks like pus under the skin. So far I've tried increasing water changes, and it didn't make any real difference, but it hasn't gotten worse either. Test strips show the same values as my other tanks. Searching the net, says it could be a fungal infection or cataract. For fungal infections, some recommend tea, and some salt baths. For cataract, I guess there's nothing to do, except maybe a pair of glasses. He seems to still have some vision, as he reacts to just as quickly to my presence and begs for food, no matter which eye is facing the glass. What treatment would you guys recommend? I have some alder growing nearby, and have used the cones for preventing fungus in fish eggs before. Would that work comparable to tea? How much should I expect it to heal up? I guess he'll be fine, even if he goes completely blind on one eye, but I'd still like to do the best I can to get him well.

Also, I have to note one great thing about him. When he goes to the surface to gulp in air, he sounds exactly like a human having hiccups. Often, when I'm alone and everything is quiet, he does it and I'm like "What? Who's there?" He gets me every time.

I bought two axolotls and one of them just always looked a little different. Looking into it he’s (or she) is going through metamorphosis. As much as I’d love him to stay an axie, I know I gotta keep him happy! This is his new home to help him along on his journey to the land!

Quarantine Buddies

✖️Ik it’s gross but this is why Red Wigglers should be cut in half! These worms can live under water for up to TWO WEEKS. They can survive in your axolotls tummy and swim straight on through
