Adopted 3 ramshorn snails. How Do I help them live a good snaily life?

Posted: 22 Apr 2020 09:27 PM PDT

I accidentally adopted 3 "pest" ramshorn snails with some Marimo moss balls. I don't know anyone with a tank I can give them to, so I dropped one in a 2-gal glass vase with filtered water and a ton of pothos cuttings & moss balls, then dropped the other two in a .5 gal with pothos and some other props. Both have 1.5-2 inches of small polished rocks at the bottom.

Day2-3 they started hanging out at the surface of both vases, so I bought a little <10 gal air pump for water circulation. Basically one gets the pump at night, the other vase gets it during the day. They seem fine with this.

It's been about 10 days and everyone (including the plants) seem happy. I don't mind them munching on any rotting parts of the plants or on the moss balls. So... how can I keep this experiment up? I'm not going to buy a real tank just for 3 snails... But if there's anything I can easily do to make their little lives better, I'm open to it. I'm not opposed to a few more to drop into eat algae in other prop jars if they happen to lay eggs.

How often should I change the water? Is filtered water from my Britta pitcher good enough?

What if 3 snails turn into a bunch of snails? Is this population self-limiting in this type of setup?

Do I need to be feeding them in addition to the dead plant ends & moss balls?

What can I change to allow more oxygen so I don't have to use the pump?

There's alot of poop. How do I deal with the poop?

Anything else I should know?

My virgin snail just gave birth

Ok so I have this EXTREMELY WEIRD situation with my snail:

I got her in june last year (it's been ten months now) and she lives all alone since then in my fish tank. As you surely know, snails are hermaphrodites, but they still need a partner to reproduce. Furthermore, as far as I know, the reproduction period can last up to two months (between the copulation and the birth of baby snails).

The thing is that, despite all of that, mine just gave birth! Now I have a lot of little snails and I'm so confused cause she lives alone since ever and I'm pretty sure she's never had snail sex.

I have two theories:

  1. She's sort of a virgin Mary but snailed
  2. She fertilized herself, defying laws of science and the universe itself

However, I still need ANSWERS. I'm looking forward to hear your conjectures

How long can snails live without food?

Posted: 22 Apr 2020 01:11 PM PDT

I have to go someone every week, and I'm gone for a good few days. It's usually Saturday-Wednesday but sometimes Tuesday. I've been having someone feed my fish for me but they pretty much destroyed my tank and I'm not sure I can trust them anymore (yes I even showed them how to feed and how much). Can they be okay or should I just take the risk? I also have two bettas.

Mystery snail changing colour

Posted: 22 Apr 2020 09:28 AM PDT

Why is my snail changing color? Is he ok? Just moved to a new larger, ph balanced (7.2) tank a few days ago. Temp at 25°C, 77°F. Pic in comments *not the eroding part, we're working on healing that, the lighter new growth next to his body
