Ammonia level

I need some help with lowering the ammonia level in my pond. I have been doing water changes and I just recently bought some Ammonia chips and put them inside my filter to see if they would help. Every time I check the levels they remain the same. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Purchasing Individual Koi

Posted: 28 Apr 2020 10:06 PM PDT

Hello,

I am wondering if there is a place in the United States that sell individual high quality Koi. I live in Texas so closest is best. However, I don't mind traveling. I'm looking for 2 younger kois for my 2000 gallon pond. Honestly, I hope to help them grow as large and plump as possible, as long as they are healthy.

I think there are websites that sell older and larger koi but I would like a younger one that has the potential to grow large. Kinda like how one might purchase a puppy.

Most the websites I've seen only offer wholesale fish. I dont want to overstock my pond.

Does anyone not feed their koi year round?

I've heard some people do this and the koi just eat insects and algae. I've got a considerable amount of algae in the pond right now so I'm considering to stop feeding for some time.

So I’ve had the 4 big koi for about a year, and no matter what they are scared of me, is there any techniques I can use to get them less scared of me? Also the pond they are in is just temporary

What was your cost to start your koi pond? Post a link to pic if possible. Thanks!

Fish Getting Stuck in Skimmer

Posted: 28 Apr 2020 09:19 AM PDT

Hello fellow Koi ponders,
I am having a major issue this week, I have had 3 fish(plus one twice!) get stuck in my skimmer box which resulted in one dying. This is my first spring in the new setup as the pond was rebuilt last summer. In 7 years of having a pond, this had never happened once with a Koi. I called my local pond store for help and their response after we confirmed the water to be healthy was, "well it happens in the spring and there is nothing really to do". I find it odd that in a week it happened 4 flippin' times and these guys had been swimming at the top of the water since February.

Against their suggestion, I constructed a temporary netting over the skimmer inlet out of my oversized predator deterrent to keep the fish out of there and since I am home so much these days, it will be a pretty easy thing to clean everyday to avoid fully blocking it.
My question for the experienced out there is, has this happened to you before? Do you have any ideas of what it could be causing this? How did you combat the issue? I'm bummed about the one fish dying as well as the two others nicking themselves up a bit when they obviously tried to thrash their way out of box, so I want to stop this before it gets worse.

One idea I am kicking around is jail cell type thing, where I would drill a few holes into the inlet and basically stick 4 or 5 bolts in to block the fish from entering as that seems like the easiest thing to clean as well, but I am open to other, hopefully better suggestions.

Thanks for the help!
