Reed plants have too sharp of roots, should I excavate them away and risk destroying the pond's banks or use ground clear?

New pond build, not new to ponds; need help

Hi All,

Let me start by thanking everyone in the community for their support with my questions, Ive spent alot of time researching the webs and Im stuck!

Back story in TL:DR - We are renting a house that had a dilapidated concrete pond in the yard. After months of hunting leaks with patch cement and pond armor, We have fish now and know exactly what I DONT want in a pond.

On to the new - We are about to become home owners and want to keep this new found passion going. Ive dug a pond in our new backyard, and I am trying to get all the planning done now so the ecosystem has time to setup before the house is built and we move the fishies. So there are a few things Ive learned in this hobby, and the big one is do it right the first time! With that said, we are trying to do it right, and on a budget (of course).

So far my equipment purchased is: a 25'x25' EPDM liner, AWG PS3900 skimmer, UV filter, TPR jet, and I have a few questions on filter, bottom drain, and waterfall. Ill be purchasing a 3000+ GPH external pump, if anyone has suggestions thats fantastic too.

Please excuse the terrible MS paint job i slapped together for visual. I am missing these last bits to really put this all together. So here it is:

  1. Do I really need a prefilter? I know I need to tie in the skimmer and the bottom drain to the pump some how. I have heard mixed results on putting the bottom drain to the skimmer, and then out to pump....
  2. Does the bottom drain need aeration? I feel like bubbles in the water will do more for keeping predators from the fish than "pulling waste" down.
  3. Prefilter or waterfall filter? If i have a bead filter, is that a prefilter?
  4. If I have to do a prefilter, I am hoping to do a DIY job, a "skippy" filter as I am seeing it called but something probably a bit more well put together.
  5. LASTLY, THE BIG ONE: I have a Intex 3000 above ground pool sand filter. I would love to convert this to a bead filter. Ive seen some success in converting these, as long as you can open up the plastic slots to let in more water. Which, I have done since i have no use for this thing if i cant use it in this pond. Hypothetically, if this works, does this mean the bead filter is my FILTER? I have ZERO experience with bead filters, only with Matala filters. However, i think i need this system to be pressurized for it all to work. Wouldnt I also still need a waterfall filter or some kind of mechanical filter in place?

Whew, sorry this post got hairy. These are the last questions i need answered before ordering my parts. Also, on the intex 3000 conversion, if anyone is curious on this, I can post pics tomorrow. I think this thing is exactly a bead filter, but with smaller openings (obviously to keep the sand in the filter). If i open them up, i think this could be a solid bead filter on the cheap.

THANKS FOR ANY ADVICE!

Mysterious Green Algae? Koi pond in Dallas, this has just appeared about a week ago as it’s getting warmer. Something to be worried about or leave it be?

Lots of milt but I can't find eggs anywhere

Posted: 20 Apr 2020 01:25 PM PDT

This has been going on for around a month now. We've had a couple thunderstorms and every time I turn off the pumps, come out in the morning, and the pond is covered with milt. I check the spawning mats and and the plants and I find no eggs. I take a net, stir up the bottom of the pond, and collect the debris. Can't find anything there as well. I'll spend an hour trying to find a single egg and I'm never successful. There are two known females and three males in the pond; I've seen them chasing each other around, and I know spawning season is upon us. I just can't make sense of it. Any advice would be appreciated.
