Shrimp identification please! Was sold both of these yesterday thinking they are both amano but the one on the left looks more brown. Possibly a wild type?

RCS and Amano shrimp dying off

Posted: 16 Mar 2020 09:46 PM PDT

Hi everyone -- Several of my RCS and Amano shrimp are dying off. Hoping to get some expert advice from you all regarding the source of the issue. First, my tank and water info:

Type: 10 gallons; heavily planted with injected co2

  • Age: ~14 months

  • Filter: Eheim w/ Eheim filter media (mech & bio)

  • Substrate: ADA Amazonia

Source (tap) water:

  • pH: 7.2

  • ammonia: 0.5ppm

  • nitrite: 0ppm

  • nitrate: 2.5ppm

Tank water:

  • pH: 6.8

  • ammonia: 0ppm

  • nitrite: 0ppm

  • nitrate: 20ppm

  • temp: ~74°

I've been able to keep a thriving colony of RCS throughout the life of my tank -- very few shrimp turned into too many to count. I currently cycle on and off the EI fert dosing method, but have never had any issues with this (shrimp and other tank mates never seemed to be affected). Within the past few weeks, I've counted at least 20 dead shrimp. I notice no sign of diseases or pests on the dead shrimp, but I'm just referencing photos I've seen within the sidebar links. The only thing that I have recently changed is me dosing iron for roughly 3 weeks. Per the iron supplement packaging, it's 100% iron; no copper (Glosso Factory Fe). Since the trigger of the die off, I've stopped dosing iron, and am performing frequent water changes (about 15-20% per week).

I currently have a GH and KH test kit on the way, so hope either of those tests point out something obviously wrong. Is there anything else that I should be testing for? Are my parameters no longer ideal? Thanks!

Poor guy =(
