Here is the place to post questions about pest ID, coral/fish ID, your cycle, or any other questions that generally wouldn't start up a conversation. If you have an interesting or unique question please create a new thread so everyone can discuss it in length!

These are some great resources for ID's of pests/algae.

First saltwater tank! Getting it ready now!

Posted: 27 Mar 2020 05:58 PM PDT

Just installed an RO/DI and I'm filling a can up now to mix saltwater. I'll put my live rock in there to begin cycling and a little bit of quick start bacteria, keeping it closed and out of light for now.

150 gallon tank with stand and sump come on Tuesday. I've got crushed coral to rinse, much more salt water to mix.

Here's my plan to cycle;

2 weeks no lights on, just light from the room it's in. Following instructions on adding quick start daily and phantom feeeing.

Clown fish goes in.

I'll wait 2 weeks from then, one month, and try my first coral.

2 weeks after that a yellow tang or 2.

Anything else or tips or pointers for a noobie?

Struggling with this hobby. Please help. :(

Posted: 27 Mar 2020 06:30 PM PDT

Hi guys,

I started my first salt water tank about 4 years ago. I took my used 20 gallon long and suited it to reef keeping based on what I read and a bunch of Youtube videos. At first I just had some fish with a coral or two here and there. I was not the best reef keeper in the beginning, but have become much more knowledgeable as I've progressed. After getting more into the hobby and learning more I upgraded my lights and filter, added a skimmer and got more corals. I have just not had luck with it. I was constantly struggling with high nitrates (API 40-80 despite even doing 50% water changes every 5 days. They never got below 40. After months of trying to get them down and having a few corals die (xenia, hammer, duncan), I upgraded to a 32 gallon biocube in January. I used some of the live rock from my old tank, used new live sand, and added more dry rock. There's a lot of rock, maybe 40-50 pounds. I let it fully cycle (~3 weeks with bacteria starter) before moving corals over, moved a few snails, hermits and clown pair after a week. Got everything moved over in the span of about 2 weeks to make sure things were stable. Things seemed to be doing well for a while, but my most of my corals are just not growing and I have again lost a couple, with a few more on the edge. I also just lost a sea hare - was taking care or a slight hair algae problem.

Corals doing well, growing: green bta, rainbow bta (splitting), blastos, frogspawn, pipe organ, galaxea, hairy mushroom, candycane

*I know anemones are only supposed to be added to a well established tank, I already had them before getting the new tank*

Corals doing ok but not growing: GSP, clove, zoanthids, ricordia, acan (eats very well)

Corals not doing so hot: rainbow bta, favia, ricordea, candy cane

Recently lost: Xenia, 1 zoa, duncan, clove

Fish - pair of clown, orchid dottyback - all doing well

Other Inverts: many snails and hermits, 1 fire shrimp, 1 peppermint shrimp

Tank set up in back of tank: 1st compartment - heater, 2nd compartment - Intank basket 1 (filter floss, chemipure blue, purigen) Intank basket 2 (matrix, NO2cubes, phosguard), 3rd compartment - return pump, temp probe.

Params since cylced (I check at least twice a week, usually 3-4):

Calcium: 360 (water change tomorrow should bring this up) (This ranges from 340-420, add calcium or do water changes as necessary) - Use either API or Hanna

Nitrate: 5 (range 5-20) - API

dKH: 8 (range 7-9)- API or Hanna

Phosphate: 0 (always 0) - API, occasionally Hanna

Ammonia: 0 (range 0-0.25) - API, water change if high

pH: 8.2 (range 8-8.2) - API

Nitrite: 0 (always 0) - API

Salinity: 1.025 (range 1.023-1.026) - refractometer

I use an RO buddy with DI attachment, water comes out to 0 or nearly 0 tds before adding salt. Using coral pro salt, mixing with powerhead and using heater before adding to tank. I do about an 8g (don't fill 5g buckets to the top) once a week, gravel vac sand.

Please help, I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I watched hundreds of videos online and read so many forum posts. Even my LFS doesn't know what else to do. :(

Open-Source Professional-Grade Aquacontroller

Posted: 27 Mar 2020 01:52 PM PDT

All,

Due to the state of global affairs, I've taken advantage of my downtime to start a project I've been wanting to work on for a long time: A replacement for my Neptune Apex!

Using the P1AM-100 module from AutomationDirect.com ($49) I created a platform with a collaborative task scheduler, Asynchronous MQTT messaging system for IOT integration, Micro-SD datalogger, NTP time synchronization of the internal clock, and a few other nifty tools.

I wasn't terribly excited about a lot of the existing open-source aquacontrollers for a few reasons: Hobby-grade hardware, potential for the controller to "hang" on certain operations and block critical functionality, and you were limited to the 3.3V-5V digital and analog IO on the Raspberry Pi/Arduino. The P1AM is a HUGE improvement in terms of durability, longevity, and expandability of hardware (e.g. 120/240V relays, Sinking vs. Sourcing inputs and outputs, high-power IO) especially when you consider the price point is just barely above the arduino (~$25 for an Arduino vs. $49 for the P1AM).

Note that this does require a certain level of technical understanding, but I will definitely be working on "lowering the bar" in future updates with better documentation and eventually compatibility with graphical programming languages (Ladder Logic).

You guys adviced me to take the gsp off my main rock structure and give him his own little rock, so I just did... He's already opening up a bit. Can't wait for it to be a little ball of gsp

Does RO saltwater go bad if left out in a bucket? If so, how would it last this way?
