PSA: have a plan in case you become ill, before it happens

Posted: 25 Mar 2020 11:39 AM PDT

As somebody with a chronic health condition, I can speak from experience that having a plan for when you're I'll is invaluable. Even during a cold or flu, is difficult to maintain the tank health when you're barely able to maintain your own health. Don't ride the knife edge when it comes to your tank husbandry because if you get sick your going to stress yourself out trying to prevent a crash, which isn't good for the health of the animals under your care nor your own health. Here's some advice, from experience, of how to plan ahead to mitigate the effect of a personal illness on the animals in your care:

Like I said, don't ride a knife edge. Try to stay ahead on your maintenance. This makes things less drastic if you're not able to do much with the tank for a few weeks.

Always have a week's worth of top up water on hand so that if somebody has to top it off for you they don't have to also learn how to make top off. If you normally buy your ro water it might be time to save up to get your own unit. If your budget is in a pinch have dechlorinator on hand and if you can mix it up ahead of time you don't run the risk of a friend mixing it up incorrectly.

Network with local people who keep saltwater tanks. You may not be able to find somebody who can commit to looking after your rank for you but it's easy to find somebody who didn't mind being called by your friend in case you're in the hospital because of a car crash or something. Just having a phone number is a huge help. If you can't find a hobbyist who can do that your LFS should be a good to to for a friend who has questions while your not available.

Know how to tear down a tank in case your health is so negatively affected that you have to tear it down. Be willing to part with your livestock individually and understand that is impossible to profit from them while you're in poor health. Focus on finding good homes and accept the fact that you're losing money. If you have a good relationship with your LFS it may be possible to place them in their care for a month or two. This is why is important to not exclusively shop online, because those relationships are important.

Avoid difficult to keep animals. If you have to feed animals with tweezers and feeding tubes chances are you're going to have a hard time finding somebody with the time to commute to your home multiple times a week to do the same. Like I said before, don't ride the knife edge. Maintain as sustainable a tank as you can.

Ps: my phone keyboards a potato

Woke up yesterday to a dead Frostbite Clown. This morning my other one is looking bad. It looks like he has a white layer of skin falling off his body and is very pale. They were very happy until two days ago. Is this velvet, brooklynella or something else? Parameters are stable only on clowns.
