Help a Starter with some questions:)

So I recently have gotten snails and I have a 2.5G tank as I'm a college kid who lives with 4 others. But I have found it so addicting and have found on YouTube and here on Reddit, people who have tanks full of life with plants, fish, shrimp, snails and it's what I really really want to do! I'm planning on hopefully getting a 5 gallon sometime in the near future, but not sure where I should start in terms of tank set up and finding the right plants, etc. I know I can probably find plenty of YouTube videos but I thought to come around here and see some personal opinions :)
