Please help my sick fish

Posted: 11 Mar 2020 07:01 PM PDT

Ok y'all I've been trying to get help with this for a while but my posts aren't getting any traction I'm going to keep it short and sweet feel free to ask questions.

125 gallon tank two common goldfish and one common pleco. Tank levels currently: pH 7.8 nitrate 5ppm nitrite 0ppm ammonia 0ppm. Pothos, pebble substrate, algae. I feed them pond fish food.

A lot of tank imbalances lately and one of my fish developed a black spot on his side. The black spot occurred about two weeks ago and has only been getting bigger. This fish is also acting very lethargic doesn't swim much eats sometimes. Very active at night but sinks to the bottom in the morning when I turn the lights on. Lights are on a low setting and I haven't changed the setting since they've been in there so I don't know what correlation that has but it's worth mentioning.

I've had this problem in the past which turned out to be caused by high ammonia levels but those are fine and have been fine so I'm not sure what's causing it this time.

Any advice is helpful I'm really worried, if I can't clear it up on my own I'll have to take him to a vet.

Book recommendations

Posted: 12 Mar 2020 12:30 AM PDT

Questions for anyone that knows. Are there any Chinese or Japanese translated books on breeding and grooming fancies? Been curious about their cultural takes on the lines they've developed.

Are there any books that you would recommend on breeding and grooming fancy goldfish?

Gold fry question.

Posted: 11 Mar 2020 09:22 PM PDT

Hey there! Just to start off- I've never kept goldfish fry. It's a long story but in short- I have baby goldfish now. Just hatched a few hours ago. Been researching like mad on how to keep them but they look so lethargic! Is this just what brand new fry act like? Just kinda hanging on the sides and laying down on the bottom. They move just fine when they swim around however.

Tested the water and it looks good, everything seems balanced.

Eww!!! Help! What are these? They’re in the breeder box I keep my duckweed in. They look like tiny shrimp. This breeder box with duckweed has been in there all year and I haven’t noticed this before.

Rant: working at a chain pet store

Posted: 11 Mar 2020 07:07 PM PDT

Apologize if this is against the rules but I need your advice goldfish people!

I was in the aquatics section of the pet store I work at and some lady comes up to me rudely saying she needs two comets. Usually they're used as feeders here so I ask if they're feeders or for pets. She goes "Oh no no they're for pets" and I ask "How big is your tank?" As we are required to ask. She goes "About 10 gallons" and I politely say "Well these fish get quite large, over a foot long and they won't do well in that small of a tank." She interrupts before I can even finish and says "I've been keeping goldfish for 15 years I know what I'm doing" (Though she didn't say HOW many goldfish she's had or how long each one lasted...)

Anyways so I do sell her the fish but I tell her she will need to upgrade eventually to a bigger tank and she acts like she knew the whole time and goes "Oh yeah yeah of course."

How do you think I should respond to these kinds of people who adamantly state they know what they're doing when they clearly do not and are especially rude about it? Should I have said more?

Aquarium lights not working. Ordered a new one and won’t get it till late next week. Will them, the goldfish, not having light cause any issues? Will they get sick? Thanks in advanced.

My fish hides all day long??? What's up with that?

Posted: 11 Mar 2020 03:07 PM PDT

Hey, I've been noticing that recently (for about a month now) my fish has been hiding out at the back of the tank, behind some plants. She isn't bottom sitting, and she does come out to eat food, but she spends about 80% of the day there, when previously she used to swim all around the tank.

She doesn't display any real signs of disease/infections. No clamped fins, discoloration, spots, etc. She's pooping fine, so I don't think it's constipation.

She's a fantail goldfish, had her about 3 years, from PetSmart.

I've been doing regular weekly water changes, and water parameters are all within normal ranges. Only fish in the tank, 20 gallons.

Anyone have any ideas?

Black moor turning white?!

Posted: 11 Mar 2020 02:50 PM PDT

I made a post on here a few days ago as I noticed that my black moors fin had a large white spot on it; I came to the decision that it was the start of a fungus issue (even though there was no cotton wool-like growth or anything yet) but I have come home this evening and seen that he has now got streaks of white and grey all over his fins. My water tests have all come back perfect, he is completely fine within himself and my other fish is completely fine also. Hope you guys can help, thanks in advance!!

Fancy goldfish question

Posted: 11 Mar 2020 01:00 PM PDT

Ok. So I have a 270 gallon pond, and LOVE fancy goldfish. We have a pond heater and the coldest the pond got was 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Could they overwinter in the pond, or should I bring them in to a tank (40 gallons) in the winter.
