UPDATE: DESPERATE NEED OF ADVICE for a 55gal....

I could have done an edit, but i felt this would be more effective. I have good news and bad news:

In happy to report that there has been an improvement in my tank. The filter was the issue. I went out to purchase sponge filters, but with the advice of an employee, i instead invested in a canister filter for my tank which i have set up and running along side my power filter, which will eventually be removed. I have covered the intakes of both filters with nylon‐i have intake prefilter sponges coming in the mail on tuesday. I ended up having to clean out my power filter but i kept the cartridges and bio grate to keep some good bacteria to cycle. Its currently still set up and running with the canister.

I bought a big testing kit and it was testing as follows:

Ph-7.0 Nitrate: 40/80 ppm -very hard to tell between the 2 colors Nitrites: 0ppm Ammonia: 0.25 ppm

The water has cleared up from its greenish color, my fish seems to be acting more like himself (begging for food, messing with his substrate etc.) however, he is still lying on the bottom of the tank. Its like hes constantly sleeping because if i walk up to him or sit by his tank he gets up and swims around and does his usual, but only if someone is watching, most other times hes laying on the bottom, sometimes his fins are up at the ready and sometimes relaxed-very rarely clamped. Sometimes he is barely hovering above the sand but mostly he is right on the sand. (He does do some swimming without interaction it just isnt very often)

The reddening color has worsened. His fins seem to be improving (the red is slowing to brown and starting to disappear) but the red spot on his "chest" (between his front 2 fins) has returned and is worsening. I did another small water change yesterday and 3 days prior to that. I tested the water just now for the following:

Nitrate: still 40/80ppm Ammonia: 0ppm

I also tested my tap water (treated) that is used for water changes

Ammonia: 1.0ppm Nitrate: 10ppm

Has my tap water been causing an issue this whole time?

The red spot is worrying- starting to make me think he might have some form of septicemia. Its really difficult to tell if he is sick or not- he acts normal sometimes but other times he acts stressed.

I appreciated all the responses to the last post!

Every time change the water (I do use stress zyme and stress coat) this guy gets white or more matte spots on his scales and fins, this has happened before but it goes away. My other fish is unaffected. Any ideas? I’m worried he is sick.

Hi ! I have a question about plants in a pond

Posted: 15 Mar 2020 04:47 PM PDT

I made a pond in my garden but it doesn't have any plant yet. There is a solar pump and a filter and some pozzolan at the bottom. The thing is there are mosquito larvae in the water and my dad wants me to put my goldfish in the pond now so he can eat them. I don't know if it's really safe since there are no plants, eventhough the water is moved a little thanks to the pump. Should I listen to my dad or insist on putting plants first ?

Some Questions About Goldfish Behaviour

Posted: 15 Mar 2020 03:56 PM PDT

I'm fairly new to goldfish, less than a year, but I've done a lot of research on how to care for them and their behavior. I encountered something today with my lot that I can't explain and I'm not sure what to do about.
My Oranda (seen here) was chasing around my other goldfish. At first he was just chasing my black moor so I assumed it was an attempt at spawning, although I think they all might be too young for that. I then noticed that he was doing it to a few others, including the butterfly telescope in the picture with him. (Please note, I don't know the sexes of any of them, I just use he/she to suit their names). On top of the chasing he was also appearing to bite or mouth the others sides. This is what caused concern for me and so I decided to post and ask for some help. He isn't biting the fins, just the sides of their bodies.
All of the water parameters are fine and tested. The tank isn't over stocked (5 goldfish in 100gallon), and they're fed high quality foods which I vary so I know they aren't hungry or lacking any nutrition. It's also just gone from summer to autumn here so that even lessens the chance of it being a weird attempt at spawning.
