Planning on a cray tank and want to know how to make a good home for them Posted: 15 Mar 2020 06:38 PM PDT I'm thinking of picking up a ten gallon tank from dollar per gallon sale at petco and getting a crayfish. I have a planted community tank so I'm familiar with fish keeping and have stuff for tank maintenance already. What are some things I should know about owning a cray? I think I want a sand substrate and some floating plants to absorb some nitrate. Obviously will add some caves. Do cray need a place that they can surface to breath? I'm thinking of a sponge filter or hang on back, any preferences on filter in the community? I also have very hard water so that should be beneficial I think. Any and all advice welcome. My crayfish's eyes have turned red? Posted: 15 Mar 2020 01:26 PM PDT Hello! I couldn't find anything with a Google search so I'm hoping maybe somebody here can solve my issue. I have a white crayfish who I believe is a female. I'm no expert, but I've compared her to photos of crayfish sex organs and female is the best guess I can make. She molted successfully a week after I got her, I presume due to better tank conditions (she was an impulse purchase from PetSmart), but now has red eyes? Before her molt she had beautiful big round black eyes, but now they're smaller and reddish in color. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it normal after a molt? They've stayed red about two weeks post-molt now. Could this be due to water issues like PH, oxygen, calcium, or diet ? The bulk of her diet is hikari crab cuisine and she loves it. She also gets small pieces of freeze dried shrimp (made by Icelandic pet treats) and is a huge fan of celery. She's tried cilantro, but dislikes it. She's perfectly active and not very skittish, she's also fairly docile. She has a few snail companions (golden Inca snails) but leaves them alone. If they're in her way, I've seen her move them, but she never hurts them. Her tank has a rock substrate, some Java moss, a few hiding spots and climbable decorations, and filtration. She's got a small heater as well, but I mostly leave it off except for cool nights when the household temp drops. Edit: here's a photo http://imgur.com/a/JvWI6lW [link] [comments] | ||
Posted: 15 Mar 2020 08:25 AM PDT My pet crayfish died after a molt. The water parameters were not very good, and I was about to do a water change. I had had him for almost a year, and he was a wild caught Cambarus Bartonii. I had him in a 5 gallon, and was planning to move him into a bigger tank soon. Does anyone know how he died?
