Traded a mushroom for a tank upgrade! Got an absolute steal on this flawless 150g CDA peninsula tank! Can't wait to get her running.

DIY stand question- where does the plumbing fit on a design like this? I have a Red Sea Reefer 170 that I want to make a custom DIY stand for, but this is throwing me off.

My 2 month old 76L/20 gallon reef tank. LPS and zoas at the moment, with a clown, hermit and a few snails... this hobby is too addicting!

Posted: 15 Feb 2020 07:16 PM PST

Want to come back to the hobby after 15 years away but so much seems to have changed and I'm a bit lost. Help?

Posted: 15 Feb 2020 09:25 PM PST

I was big into the hobby from around '93 - '04. Had 9 tanks, a 1600 gallon pond, worked at a LFS for 2-3 years, bred some pajama cardinals, maroon clowns, and koi, the works... then life happened. Now I'm ready to dive back into another reef tank and so much has changed in reef tech, while seems the same in freshwater (except undergravel filters) and pond. I've been lurking for a couple of years but I'm left feeling unsure where to start with what has changed.

Lighting: When I was running tanks, most units set right on the lid, Mercury Halides were the top of the line, compact flourecents, then VHOs. Now it's all LEDs and even with guides I have trouble figuring out what I need. Also the move to more compact LED housings means the lights sit 18" above the tank, not right on the rim. I personally find this super distracting because of glare. How do others feel about having the light sitting high above the tank? Are there quality lid top units or are they mostly replaced because of the convience of just moving higher mounted units out of the way?

Tank lids: Never had a tank fresh, salt, or reef without a lid to help evaporation, keep salt spray down, and help prevent escapes. Seems like everywhere I look not they're all rimless and or lidless. Are lids just not a thing anymore unlless they're mesh to prevent escapes?

Filtration: On my 2 reefs I just had a sump I added supliments to with some mechanical filtration and a protein skimmer, powerheads in the tank, and bunches of live rock. Nowadays seems like folks' under the cabinet setups are way way more complicated.

I guess a lot of the new hotness is just intimidating, while I want the live probes for water quality, the scheduled automated light arcs, and so on, does anyone out there still run low tech simple reef setups and index for balance in the tank over leaning on tech? Or is it about packing the maximum of creatures and letting technology keep you aware of what you need to tweek? Working at a shop you really get a pulse for what's working, what's just gimmick, and what's just for show. As helpful and great as I've found this community, it's still hard to seperate the instagramreefreality from the reality.

Any advice to get me over the hump and back into the tank?
