[AUTOPOST] CARESHEET, WIKI & WEEKLY HELP POST - February 17 to February 24

Posted: 17 Feb 2020 02:33 AM PST

Welcome to r/bettafish!

Click this link to view our CARESHEET

Quick synopsis of caresheet:

  • Minimum tank size is 5 gallons (about 20 liters) for a regular sized betta, and 10 gallons (about 40 liters) for a king/giant betta

  • Bettas need an adjustable heater and a thermometer to ensure water temperature stays between 78-82°F or about 26-28°C

  • Bettas need a cycled tank- this requires a filter

  • Bettas need silk or live plants and hidey holes with no sharp edges.

  • Bettas have a special organ, the labyrinth organ, allowing them to breathe air. They require constant access to air at the top of the tank.

  • Bettas will jump- it is best to have a tank with a lid

Click this link to view our WIKI

Quick synopsis of the wiki:

  • Contains info on basic betta care, diseases, potential tank mates, tail types/coloring, differences between males/females, ordering bettas, moving with bettas, setting up sororities and MORE!

  • This most likely has the answers to your questions. Feel free to ask questions if you are confused or aren't sure about something.

WEEKLY HELP POST

This is the place to ask anything and everything about bettas. Be sure to include your water parameters(ammonia/nitrite/nitrate,) tank size, how long the specific issue has been occurring, and some pictures if there is something which requires a diagnosis (e.g. fin rot/melt, velvet, dropsy.)

How do I upload pictures?

Go to imgur.com and select "New Post". Add all the clear pictures you have so we can better determine what is going on with your fish. It is recommended you set the album to private if you don't want weird comments. Click upload. From there, click the share button- if you are on mobile, hit "copy to clipboard" and paste the link into your comment on here. If on desktop, copy the link and paste it here.

For those new to technology- ctrl + c is copy, ctrl + v is paste.

To have your link like this, put these [ ] brackets around the text you want to show, with no space before the first word or after the last word, and without adding a space after the second bracket, use parentheses ( ) for the link, with no spaces between the parentheses or the link itself.

Be sure to read our rules before posting or commenting.

If your question was not answered yesterday, please feel free to post again!

Ask away!

I’ve officially had Carrie for over a year now! It’s amazing how much she’s grown, both in terms of size and sassy personality.

Globettad, a rant (about one owner)

Posted: 17 Feb 2020 11:10 AM PST

Just had a "debate" with someone on FB Group who was proudly showing off their Glo betta kit setup wherein they have 1 male and 2 female glo bettas.

FB aquarium groups are the worst, I swear. I only stay subscribed in it to give away shrimp that I constantly have to do.

But regardless of keeping 1 male and 2 female betta in a tank, who thinks that keeping 3 fish in a 3g tank is OK in any way? Of course he does the whole "as long as you keep the water parameters in check... they're totally happy and not aggressive to each other, and it's better than the cup the stores sell them in!" The normal BD that "That Guy" always says.

Don't be That Guy, people, please! Rant over.

Crowntail vs combtail. Here's my black orchid betta I found at PPS. It had him labeled as a crowntail however he has doubled prongs so I didnt know if that actually made him a comb tail or not.

The temptation is REAL

Anyone seen a betta like this before? I don't know if he's anything in particular other than 1) a delta and 2) BEAUTIFUL!!

I have a spare tank ready and waiting for an inhabitant, but not sure if I'm ready for a new baby after I lost my oldest betta, so I figured I'd share photos while I contemplate!

From 5 litres to 60: Beowulf the rescue betta

From 5 litres to 60: Beowulf the rescue betta

Left: he'd been living in an unfiltered, unheated vase for over a year. Right: his new 60L home

Everyone meet Beowulf. I rescued him from a woman who was selling her betta online because she was moving house. She'd been keeping him in a (barely) 5 litre unheated, unfiltered vase, with just some glass pebbles, BITS OF BROKEN GLASS and a cactus-shaped tealight holder (!) as decoration/hiding places. I couldn't bear the thought of her selling him to someone who would continue to keep him in that vase, and someone who probably wouldn't know about water changes, etc. I already have one betta but did have a spare 15L tank lying around...which then quickly got upgraded to a 60L... Beowulf is pretty big for a betta so needs his space! His fins have already started to unclamp and he has been building lots of bubble nests, so I think he appreciates his roomy new home. It makes me mad that people think it's OK to keep fish in stupid little vases as if they're a bunch of flowers... but I hope I can give this guy a good life. I'm sure he is more colourful now than when I got him, too. Very long fins which I hope will open up even more as he settles in. (And yes, I will fill the tank to the top, I am just checking it is stable on the stand I'm keeping it on!) Tank mates: just 3 mystery snails. He doesn't seem to mind them at all.

You can see his old 'home' on the left. Considering using it as a candle holder or plant pot....
