Okay guys, I went back and bought up all the axolotls! If you want one, they cost me $6 each, so $6 plus shipping and they're yours! Spreading the axolotl love AND making my husband think I'm insane, all at the same time!

Small PSA about Petco and Petsmart (Pricing)

Posted: 24 Feb 2020 08:03 AM PST

Hey there folks,

I've noticed a lot of people getting into Axlotl's are more reptile people, not aquarist people, and the whole figuring out a filter and media and cycling and all that may seem daunting. You probably think that your LFS (a term for Local Fish Store) like petco or petsmart may have the best prices / be in your best interest.

Not So.

These places have their purpose, but if you are planning on buying ANYTHING for your Axie tank from them, follow my advice and you WILL save a large amount of money.

Tanks: Want that spicy 20 gallon long tank? Petco runs a special every few months a year selling tanks for a dollar a gallon. You can look up or ask in store when their next dollar per gallon sale will be going on. This can get you about half off the price of a tank.

Filter Media / Substrate / Filters / Lights: Basically, everything but food and tanks. Always , and i mean ALWAYS bring your phone with you. Anything you see in store that you want, google search it and check to see what its price is on Chewy. Why chewy? Well Petco price matches to PetSmart, Petsmart owns Chewy. Petsmart Price Matches to Chewy. Which means Petco also price matches to Chewy. This can save you A LOT OF MONEY. How much Money? Well lets take filters. A six pack refill of size C Marineland HOB (hang on back) filter cartridges costs about 32 USD in petco. At Petsmart it costs 21 USD. It is 7.50 USD on Chewy. This works for all things. I was setting up my axie tank and by using my phone, bringing up Chewy pages for each product i was buying, I saved 70 USD on my tank setup. Filter media is the most overpriced in store purchase that you can use this to save money on. And you will be buying filter cartridges quite often with an axie if you use a hang on back filter.

Food: This is the more rough part. Since most axie food is refrigerated, you can't easily get it online and delivered, so there isn't a Chewy reference for them. But where you save from one side you can spend on the other.

Water Testing: Do not bring your water in to one of these places to be tested. Learn to do it yourself. Buy a good water testing kit from Petco (EXPENSIVE) price match it to Chewy (SUDDENLY 1/3 the price!) And take it home. A good water testing kit from aquaeon just requires you to fill vials, drip in some drops of liquid into them, and then shake, and wait five minutes. I assure you there is no fancy machine in the back of Petco that mysteriously tests water. Its just them using one of these kits. "BUT ITS FREE" you might say. Yeah. But i mean ... if you get one of those testers, you don't have to drive to petco to get your water tested. Meaning you save money on gas. Voila.
