- This is one of her favorite spots now!
- Added Fish a few days ago ^^
- First ever fry. I believe they are glass catfish.
- My first planted tank 4 months in. So much still to learn and to improve in the design. Weird fish choices, I know. This has helped me cope with lots of stress.
- Update on my hair grass seeds from Chinese supplier. Decided to just wait things out before restarting.
- My 150 gallon land/water planted tank! Unfortunately I have to take everything out tomorrow since I’m moving.
- Can’t wait to get it stocked!!
- One and a half week update of my freshly scaped tank. Really liking where this is going.
- Rescaped 4 months ago
- Rough hard scape for the 180
- My first planted tank is officially cycled.
- 3 months update on the dirted tank, I am more than happy how it turned out
- Is this a normal amount of roots for one Madagascar Lace?
- Here’s my 1 month betta tank update! Everyone is doing great and the plants are booming! No CO2/ferts/nutrients added, just fish!
- My experience with diy led lighting
- First planted tank Second time I've posted a pic. It's been up for 4 or 5 months. Enjoy this hobby so much. Open to any advice or criticism.
- My 5gallon Aquatop now matured- didn't want to forget about yall over here.
- Badass
- Guppies, snails and algae
- My shrimp flex (9g)
- I love crypts
- I don’t think my DHG tissue cultures are gonna make it
- Update on the new purchase!!
- Can’t wait to watch this grow out
- Ripped out all plants and deep cleaned everything after failing to beat staghorn algae. Tried everything. Re-planted with my favourite fast growing plant. Going with just the single type and it looks really unique. The fish love swimming through it all and it’s easy to propagate.

My experience with diy led lighting Posted: 09 Jan 2020 08:35 PM PST Hi, obligatory excuse the formatting please, I'm on my mobile. I did though want to share some experiences that might help you guys find new and interesting aspects of the hobby or save yourself a fair bit of money. I have been building my own (and a few friends) LED lighting for a good few years now and have done enough experiments that I can probably make it a bit easier for anyone who likes to over think/research things like me. I am happy to answer a few questions but a full tutorial is beyond this post. I have tried a lot of designs, colours, combos, half and half direct comparison tanks, wattage etc. And I've bought a lot of different types of LEDs. The best pattern I have found is to spread the LEDs evenly deviding the tank in 3 lengthways with 2 rows, and deviding it in 4 side to side with 3 rows, giving you 6 LEDs. This applies to 2 foot tanks and would be expanded in multiples for longer tanks, but you need 6 lights per 2ft. I've tried less and more. Less gives uneven spread, more simply isn't better, it's just extra time, money and effort. When I did more it was generally to test colour combos, which brings me to the actual LEDs used. I'm using the cree xte 5w led on the 20mm star pcb board. These come in a lot of colours, but I got onto them due to their popularity with marine tanks and the availability of blue 420nm. There are a lot of whites in this range, of which I've tried about 10. They spread 120 degrees each. The one I'm sold on is the cool white 6500-7000k. It's hard to find, and you can also get 6000k, 6000-6500k, 6500k (all cool white). These are a 1-5w led, and I've found that running them at 2.5w each for shallow or low tech tanks, 3w each for 12-15" depth - mid to high tech tank, 3.5w for full high tech or 18" plus depth, 4w is a lot of light, and generally excessive. These resulted in by far the most growth of suitable quality (density, colour etc). I do not have a par meter, this is pure trial and error. Colour combinations - I know, everyone says you need the red and blue too. I personally found fairly ordinary plant growth (no better than plain white) and found that the tank looked like it was under fake lights, there was definitely a look factor I didn't like, even after multiple adjustments to brightnesses. Other whites (natural white - 4000-5000k, and warm white - 2700-3500k), resulted in slower growth and less brilliant fish and plant colouring, both in combo and alone, 1/2 & 1/2 etc tested a few times too. I generally build my own aluminium frame, and mount each led on a 282811mm heatsink, held in with stainless steel screws and with thermal paste under each. I power them with an ebay purchased constant current, constant voltage dc buck converter. Recently new ones have come out with an lcd display which makes setup and adjustments easy, these are around $7US. Anyway, that's a lot of writing, thanks for sticking it out, I hope it's helpful.
